Post op backache

Hello,

My husband had an oesophagectomy on 14th November.   The surgeon was pleased with his progress and he was discharged from hospital on 21st.   On the whole his recovery is going well, able to have a short walk every day and feeding is becoming slightly easier, although having to eliminate certain foods to avoid diarrhoea.   His main problem is backache around his right shoulder blade.   It is causing him sleepless nights as it is much more severe when he is in bed.   I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this?   I feel it is really impeding his recovery at the moment.

On a separate issue, he has a slight, non productive cough - I wonder if this is just caused by irritation to the throat maybe?

Any advice gratefully received.

Mel

  • Hi good to hear your husband is recovering.

I have the same problem the pain goes from my shoulder right round into my chest area.  I struggle to sleep with it and it’s stopping me doing too much in the day.  I am using ‘‘deep freeze’  before bed as I have found it gives me some relief for a little while, I was told by the surgeon it was nothing to worry about and should go away within the next month.

I also have a cough but again I was advised as they deflated one of the lungs it is just caused by irritation to the lung and should ease over time.

its is hard recovering with all these things!

I hope it all gets better soon

  • My husband is 2 weeks post op and really struggling to sleep at night too. If he tries to lay down at all he coughs non stop so ends up sleeping upright but is still only managing a coupe of hours at a time.  He hasn't had any info/support or follow up so I wasn't sure if this was a common side effect from the surgery, so sounds like it is. I hope it doesn't last for too long though.  I hope your hisbands recovery is progressing well.
