I was diagnosed with Oesophagus cancer just about 1 year ago. Could not have Chemo but had 20 sessions of Radiotherapy. Was given relatively good news after a while. However my health began to deteriorate and it was found that i was bleeding internally from scarring around the tumour. I was hospitalised and was given 4 units of blood. Further scans at that time showed the tumour had not gone away. That was back in April this year when, without treatment, I was given 6 months to live. Because of other health problems and on advice from the Oncology team At Guy's Cancer Centre I made the decision not to have treatment. Their opinion was that my quality of life after any treatment might be actually worse than currently. Since April and up until about 3 weeks ago I was doing fine, eating soft foods and enjoying most things. For the past 3 weeks things have gone from bad to worse and now find it difficult at times to even swallow water. I am currently awaiting a date to have a stent fitted, hopefully within the next week. It is very gratifying to read about the benefits of this treatment on the forum and am looking forward to a new lease of life, be it long or short. I will be forever grateful for the wonderful attention and care that the NHS has given me and I cannot praise the Oncology staff enough for their almost daily contacts.

  • Hello Old Blue Eyes

Welcome to the forum, it's great that you found us and have chosen ti share some of your story with us.

I imagine it a difficult decision to not have more treatment during the discussions back in April , and it is good to hear that you had been doing fine, but sorry to read that around 3 weeks ago things started to go from bad to worse.  I hope you have a good support network around you, should you need to chat with one of the Macmillan team, their number is in my signature, they may have ways to offer support if you need any.

I also hope you get the stent soon, that may help a great deal with being able to swallow.

Please let us know how you get on and all the best with your new lease of life
