Preparing myself

I found this site so helpful when a few years ago I was going through my own cancer journey.  Hoping that this will be the same now!  My mum has been told she has cancer.  They are still to confirm oesophageal but it’s pretty certain to be (tumour found on endoscopy last week, biopsied result immediately). MDT meeting soon for plan as they will have CT SCAN results too which was done this week

I’m tying myself in knots to be honest.  The consultant on the day said that surgery will be required but how do they know without all the results? Surely (and god forbid) a CT scan might show metastasis or a different route needed.

I know I’m confused because we need to wait but it’s killing me and I’m not handling this news well.  I flip flop between the utter worst thoughts to thinking she’s only had mild symptoms for a month so surely if will all be fine.

not sure what I’m looking for …. I probably just needed to vent!

thanks Heart️

  • Vent away.

So the route to a cure is surgery.
As you say a CT will be required, and probably a PET scan. The MDT will then decide upon a treatment plan. It may be a couple of weeks till they have enough test results to arrive at a staging and make a decision about a treatment path. Hopefully surgery will be a curative option. Otherwise other treatments are possible. Some are very successful, depending on the staging and other factors.

you probably know all this but are finding the waiting impossible. I found that to trust in the process and that the clinical team will do what is best for your mother, is the best and only way to manage the uncertainty and cope with the waiting. I hope that after the initial shock has worn off you can help your mother to understand the process and be able to listen to her worries and concerns.

Counting the days, making every day count.
