Hello everyone

I have been reading the forum for a few weeks now and found it very helpfull. Thought I would now introduce myself.

My husband of 53 years was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in July 2021. Swallowing problems started in December 2020, after various investigations, got the awful news.
3 weeks ago he had gone down to 67kg he was 85kg, could barely get fluids down.

had 1st dose of chemo, cistaplatin and 5fu, amazing how much his swallowing has improved. He is actually eating normal food again, although he is staying away from chunks of meat.  2nd chemo is still in situ and will be removed tomorrow, so far minimal side effects thank goodness, but it’s normally about 10 days before they kick in.

He commences radiotheraphy and more chemo in a couple of weeks, for 5 weeks, then 10 week break they said and then hopefully surgery if all has gone to plan.

He is very anxious about the next stage of treatment and keeps changing his mind about having surgery.
Any reassurance I can give him.

sorry to waffle on,

  • Hello T123

Welcome to the forum and thank you for sharing the journey that you are currently on with your husband, 53 years, wow, congratulations.

I know that it is scary and I am sorry to read that your husband has this diagnosis, and I fully understand why he/you would be anxious, once of our champs here always states that it the fear of the unknown that gets to us the most.

Chemo and Radiotherapy combined I imagine is quite daunting, but others have their own experiences of the combined therapies, and they may be along later to chat, but I want to say... stay strong, the fact the chemo has helped with his eating is a real positive sign.

I am just rushing off to work, but can be found around the forum most days, happy to chat if it will help.

Take care of both of you
