Son (53) had oesophagus tumour removed  early December discharged 5 weeks later to us as he lives alone.. On a feeding line through the night and trying to eat little and often , not very successfully during the day. Employers now wanting to know when he will be returning to work.  So far they've been very supportive but are now talking reduction in money.

How, when , have others got back to work?

  • HI

May partner isnt back to work finished all treatment in September but he had only started a new job and unfortunately no pay then.  He keeps in touch and is hoping to go back at some stage but def not able yet due to fatigue and dumping and a few other issues, he had to go down the benefits route and the sick line covers 3 years.  Yes a big reduction in money but there was nothing we could do his insurance didnt even cover him.

    Sorry this wont help you..

  • Hi Thanks for this, it's so difficult the consultant surgeon says all ok need to get back to normality ASAP the consultant oncologist says 'remember you've had major surgery, don't push it '

  • I mean if he only had surgey in December im sure hes still in pain, my fella had his ribs broken in order to remove tumour he had his surgery in May and is still in pain down his side.   It probably depends on how he feels himself if he gets dumping or anything like that im sure it would be hard for him to work.

  • He too had his ribs broken, I guess as well it depends on your job.

He need to speak with his boss

  • Hello, I had my op in March last year and had follow up Chemo in June/July  I was off work for 4 months and went back to work on limited duties.

I worked from home so no commute and not very physical.

I think it is shocking that his employer is applying any pressure on him to return to work, they need to be told what this op means, it's not easy and your son will need to give his body time to heal.

It is a worry when you drop to SSP and don't have an income, and I would suggest getting some guidance on benefits he might be able to claim due to ill health. He should also look at PPI payments, they are mot means tested

  • Hi there!

I had my op in 2018 and went back to work 2 years later. My employer did not try and rush me back but other circumstances did.  I wouldn't rush back too soon. You have had major surgery and you really do need to adjust to your new plumbing and listen to your body. My health hasn't been the same but fortunately I am still here living a second life.

No need to rush back. Just adjust to lower income with benefits etc Since you have had cancer you have additional protection on the job front. Just contact MacMillan and they should put your through to someone that could help or advise you.

I am still working but using annual leave to give me part time hours.

    Take care,
