Oesophageal rupture

Hi,

My dad sadly passed away on Saturday morning, he woke up at 5 am Friday morning in absolute agony, my mum called the hospice for the nurse to come round, as soon as nurse saw him she called an ambulance, but this wasn't until the afternoon. We were called to the hospital that evening, originally thinking it was a collapsed lung, but it transpired after x-rays and CT scan that dads osophugus had ruptured. I just wondered how common this is, we wasn't told that this was even a possibility and we are all feeling so bad for dad, he passed away at 7 am Saturday morning and so he was in excruciating pain for about 14 hours altogether, he was so distressed for most of that time and no matter how much morphine they gave him he was still so distressed , which obviously made the whole experience so much more traumatic for us all. I held his hand and tried to soothe him as much as I could  right up to when he passed, but I still feel so guilty, but I am trying to tell myself at least he is out of all that pain now.

I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this or even knows anything about why this happened.

  • Hi Chabasa

I am truly sorry to read the sad news that your Dad passed away on Saturday morning after experiencing severe pain and discomfort due to an Oesophageal Rupture.

Unfortunately this is not something I have heard of before, and as each person's experience is different can I suggest you discuss this with either a hospice nurse or your Dad's oncologist.

Guilt is something that many of us experience at the loss of a loved one, for whatever our reasons we always feel that we should or could have done more Pensive but in truth we do everything we can at the time and your Dad knows you did everything you could for him.

My sincere condolences to you and your family at this very sad time.
