My husband has T3N1 , He has a feeding tube fitted since December 2019 and weight was stable , the plan is 4 cycles of flot over 8 weeks  through Hickman line , surgery then 4 more cycles. He had his first cycle on the 28 January not had it easy one bit . What I would like to know has anyone had a bleeding tumour after first round of chemo it started early hour Monday so has been in hospital it’s not a continuous bleed it stops and starts . Doctors not worried as all bloods are good and platelets so it definitely coming from tumour and the smell is rotten. They recon this first round is doing the job and said it’s quiet common yet no one said this might  happen.

Hi Tarrant101, I'm sorry, I can't fully answer your question but I did experience something a little similar. I was diagnosed with T2N3 staging in October 2018 and the diagnosis was very unexpected for me (as I'm sure it is for everyone). I hadn't experienced any issues swallowing but I had been really tired and worn out and had been diagnosed with unexplained anaemia earlier on in the year which as a man is quite unusual.

During my first endoscopy where they initially noticed the tumour it was very obvious something was wrong, I could see the tumour on screen and it was bleeding a little. The doctor completing the endoscopy immediately advised that it was likely I had cancer and she also said the weeping/bleeding was almost certainly the cause of my anaemia earlier on in the year.

It's really tough to understand what to expect when going through all this but if the doctors aren't worried that's great. If you do have any worries though or need to talk to someone take advantage of the support contacts they give you. I found the specialist nurses were always helpful and willing to answer any questions or concerns I had.

    Kind regards,

    Chris

  • Hi ,

Sorry to hear about your husbands diagnosis.

In 2018 I had an endoscopy that found a bleeding friable tumour at the junction of my oesophagus and stomach. The biopsies confirmed it was malignant and I was initially staged as T4N2M? until exploratory surgery determined that my cancer hadn't spread to my diaphragm, but my tumour was resting on my diaphragm.

I'm now in remission after 4xFLOT --> surgery --> 4xFLOT. But I'm still bleeding and anaemic. I was given iron infusions for my pre and post surgery chemo cycles.

I think the chemo (FLOT) has changed my blood chemistry and made me bleed pretty much constantly internally? But this is not a major issue. They are just keeping an eye on me and prescribing iron tablets.

So yes it can be frightening passing blood, but no this will not impact the results of your husband's treatment.

Hi Anon 613 . Thanks for your reply. You had same treatment plan as my husband. Glad to hear your Ned .chemotherapy dose strange things to the body because of how toxic it is . Thankfully the bleeding stopped on Tuesday evening , but as that stopped other side effects kicked in hopefully he will feel more normal tomorrow as got second cycle on Tuesday.  Do the side effects get worse   The more you have ?  Kind regards christine

  • Hi Christine,

I hesitated before replying to you. For me the side effects of FLOT got steadily worse. I was told by my oncologist that the effects of chemo are cumulative and only 40% of patients complete the 8 doses of FLOT. But it's worth it! I and many others are living proof of this.

A positive mental attitude really helps.

Wishing your husband all the best.

Hi Anon613 thanks for replying. I thought it would be think I was just hoping. He got a good attitude towards it , playing havoc with his feeding with the side affects. Hopefully he will be one of the 40% to complete it . Kind regards christine
