Hi everyone.
I’m new to this group so looking for a bit of advice. My husband had his 1st round of chemo on Friday (6 days ago) and has barely been able to get out of bed since. The sickness for the 1st 3 days was horrendous. He’s got no appetite so barely eating and feels so weak. Does this sound normal? I don’t know if I should be worried about this or not.
thanks
Hi Snookerloopy,
Sorry to hear that your husband is suffering such severe side effects to the chemo, my husband had four rounds of FLOT chemo prior to his operation on the 7th October and is expecting to start the post chemo next week. As I am sure you are aware everyone has a slightly different reaction to the chemo and there are also different sorts of chemo, as I said before my husband was given FLOT, he felt tired with the first round but that didn't kick in until about day 4 or 5, I hope that you have been given details and advice relating to the sickness meds that the hospital can supply you, there is more than one type so it may be a case of trying a different sort if the current ones are not working. Of course if he is feeling constantly sick eating will be tough, staying hydrated is really important though, my husband was drinking at least 2 litres of bottled water each day. My advice would be to contact the CNS assigned to your husband, you should have been given a list of phone numbers by the hospital. I know that caring for a loved one can be extremely stressful, but hopefully the team will be able to advise and guide you both through this. There are lots of lovely people on this forum who will be more than willing to help with advice as well. Sending you both love and strength. XX
Hi Snookerloopy,
That's sounds awful for your husband. I hope he improves as the cycle continues. I know it varies for everyone but my first chemotherapy cycle left me feeling horrible too. The hospital I was with did a review before starting the second cycle for me which gave me a chance to share the problems I experienced with the oncologist. As a result they tweaked the steriod dose I was given as well as the sickness medications. I still felt fairly bad for the second cycle but it was a marked improvement compared to the first.
The doctors have a number options to help treat the nausea so it's worth trying something different and seeing if it works better.
Kind regards,
Chris
