Having a meeting at western park hospital sheffield today to discuss pre operative chemo for my osophagias cancer. Need about 6 or 8 weeks of chemo. Does chemo make you feel bad.? I am a 69 year old fairly fit male. 15stone. Never smoked. Operation is planned in new year. Its described as a "curative" opetation which is positive. Any thoughts please?

  • Hi Chris

I’m sorry to find you here, but there are lots of us survivors contributing to this forum who can share their experiences with you.

I doubt you know what chemo you will be on yet. I was diagnosed in 2013 and was put on 3 cycles of ECX, each of 3 weeks. There is another sort of chemo out now called FLOT. I was expecting to feel awful but if I hadn’t been retired I think I would have continued to go to work while on the treatment. As it was I had mild nausea, pretty much all the time; the antiemetic drugs didn’t seem to have any effect on me! I ended up with a slight loss of feeling in my right foot. Otherwise I didn’t suffer too much, unlike some who had a bad taste in their mouth and skin problems. It does seem to vary from person to person. The more positive you are the fewer side effects, it seems.
Not having had the new FLOT drugs, I cannot comment.

My tumour was down graded from T2 to T1b after chemo. But it was still there and obviously had to be removed by Ivor Lewis surgery.
