My dad was diagnosed over 2months ago, due to previous ill health they have ruled out surgery. He starts chemo in 2 weeks, he is a physically fit 70 yr old who walks around 8 miles a day and carries a lot of responsibility amongst our large family.

I am concerned what the chemo will do to his energy levels as he is someone who needs to be busy, it has a massive impact on his mental wellbeing.

I understand everyone is different but I am curious as to what I should potentially expect

Thank you

T.

Hi I am 62 when diagnosed had chemotherapy and radiotherapy then op after op surgeon said cancer was gone before operation but needed to do it to confirm it had gone so chemo can work and clear it I was very lucky had no side effects except tired in last week which went on for about three weeks later good luck with everything

  • I had ecx chemo before my surgery and apart from a constant slight nausea I didn’t suffer from fatigue. I should have kept up my gym membership but because I expected to have no energy and to be feeling bad all the time I cancelled. I have reinstated it now and really enjoy several classes each week.

Counting the days, making every day count.

    Hi John,

Thank you for such an encouraging email. I hope it is not to prying to ask if you had previously been given an approximate amount of time that you would still be around for with or without chemo? I ask as my dad is expected to last up to 12 months. Despite the fact he is sure he will be around much longer,  it weighs heavy on my mind. Although he is a lucky so and so.

    Best wishes

    Hi Brent,

Thank you for such a cheerful response, I can find it hard at times, remaining positive even though it is my typical mindset, the whole thing can knock you for six some days. My family tend not to talk about it, so reading replies like yours helps to get an understanding of what could be expected and remain optimistic.

    Best wishes
