My dad was diagnosed yesterday with Oesophageal cancer, he’s only 61. He’s going to have surgery keyhole if that doesn’t get rid he will have open surgery. They think they will be able to get rid of it. He had not been well and had a ct scan which he had gone for results yesterday but he’s not been able to eat or drink so he’s on a drip.   He lives so far away and I can’t afford to go and see him.   Everything I keep reading is not good and because he’s had symptoms does that mean it’s been caught late.   So many questions???

Hi Tinkabelle, sorry to hear that your dad has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Do not worry yourself sick and do not give up hope. What staging has he been given? I was T3 N2 M0 staging which means it had grown into the outer layer, and there was cancer cells in 3-6 lymph nodes, but had not spread to other parts of the body. I had lost about 5 stones in weight, was 57 years old and had been a smoker for 45 years. Do not focus on statistics and tell him to be positive, it really does help to get you through the process. I didn't have any treatment just the Ivor Lewis surgery which leaves a large scar on my right side. It's so they can get access to the oesophagus by deflating the right lung, but I had keyhole surgery on the abdomen. I had the surgery in October 2016 and have been doing quite well since. I kept putting off going to the doctor for about 6 months so I don't think your dad has been caught late. Feel free to ask me anything and good luck. Kind regards Frank.
