Hi all, I am very new to this, my husband was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer a few weeks ago and we had the endoscopy and CT Scan and told it was curable with an operation, got referred to Oxford hospital, had a consultation and the surgeon said it might not be curable and was very negative and said if it has spread then it is incurable. Had the PET Scan and they called us to say it has spread to the liver and that was it. I called our Macmillan nurse because we didn’t know what to expect, she said the oncologist is off next week so won’t get an appointment until the following week to find out what is going on. We are trying to carry on as normal but it is so hard, we have 4 young children and our life has been sent on a rollercoaster. Can anyone offer any advice or experiences when it has spread? We don’t even know what stage or anything, the whole thing has just been a nightmare and we have waited nearly 5 weeks since his endoscopy where we were told straight after you have cancer but I can’t tell you anything else because I don’t know. The waiting is driving us insane. He can’t eat most foods but can drink, has lost almost 4 stone in weight, we have seen a dietitian but his eating is getting harder. Thank you in advance for any replies! Leanne

  • Hi Leanne. I'm sorry you n your husband have such a long wait., especially with 4 young children  (Just spotted your post after heading for the loo)

I'm an ordinary member like yourself, with a different sort of cancer.  but a Community Champion will b along shortly to welcome u to the site n give u a few pointers. In the meantime, u might want to fill out your profile so folk know  a bit more about u both?

The helpline's a good place if u want more info,  0808 808 0000:, 8am to 8om and also the other members of this group.

Btw, I've had kidney cancer for'14 + years n am classed as stage 4.  ie it's spread to umpteen places,. I've no intention of giving up  anytime soon!

Incurable is just a term. It can be treatable tho not curable, ie kept at bay, symptoms dealt with and so on.  The liver's a remarkable organ. Rather like the kidneys ,u can manage with only part of the liver.

When u see the oncologist take a list of questions with u n write down the answers for future reference.

What a stupid person the surgeon is. No ppl skills. Tell it like it is but don't explain what u actually mean !

Fear of the unknown is the worst thing. Once we know what we're facing, we find the strength to deal with it.
  • You might want to join the Family and friends group, to get support from ppl in a similar position to yourself.
