Hi everyone. This site used to be my greatest support when my 47 year old husband was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer 6 years ago. He sadly lost his fight 16 months later.

I wanted to find out has anyone had any dealings with Barrett’s oesophagus? My daughter who is 28, has recently being diagnosed with a hernia which is how her daddy started off. Now she has had results back from her biopsy which indicates she has Barrett’s oesophagus. I know in a small number of cases that it can lead to oesophageal cancer. I asked before on a previous post a few years ago was this cancer hereditary and it seemed not to be but now I’m questioning it again.

My daughter is naturally concerned due to her age and family history. Any insight into Barrett’s oesophagus would be great. I am also going to speak to our family doctor.

Thanks

    Dear barra,

I am very sorry for your husband. I have just read your above message, and would like to recommend that you search for the "no stomach for cancer" foundation.

They have loads of information about heridatery GI carcinomas which you may find useful for investigating about your daugthers symptoms in light of her fathers history.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Hi

Sorry for your loss. My 50 year old husband has just completed his post op chemo. His only symptom was minimal trouble swallowing food pre diagnosis of T3 N2. His brother has Barrett’s oesophagus, mum has reflux and his step sister some other gastric problems. We mentioned all this to his oncologist who did not seem too concerned, however you can’t help but wonder if there is a link. I intend to ask again as we have a son 23 and daughter 20 and want to know if they should screened/tested in the future.
