Hi wonder if anyone can shed some light.

My dad had his surgery last June, removed food pipe, brought up stomach and loads of lymph nodes removed,

he then got the all clear, but ever since has been struggling to eat, he struggles to keep down what he does managed and has lost lots of weight since, his weight is now lower then when he was first diagnosed, dietician has tried shakes etc, but still loosing weight, he has requested to have feeding tube out back in.

But did anyone else loose a considerable amount of weight after surgery and struggle this much, he’s tired 24/7 no energy, struggles with even short walks. Thought he would start to perk back up after being given the all clear, but no improvement. :(

Hi, sorry to hear about your dad. I had the Ivor Lewis surgery in October 2016 after being diagnosed with T3 N2 M0 staging. I think about the top third of the stomach was removed and about 9 lymph nodes and some of the stomach was pulled up to form the new gullet. I didn't have chemotherapy and radiotherapy prior to the surgery, I don't know if that makes any difference. I was 57 at the time and have recovered well, I had to get the gullet dilated about 6 weeks after surgery since then I've had no problems swallowing. I never had problems keeping food down. What is his eating regime, small amounts about 6 times a day? What medication is he on and what age is he? There's many things to consider after surgery, I have been lucky to have gained a lot of the weight back. I left hospital at 57 kilo's I had a check up last week and I was 99 kilo's !. Good luck and kind regards Frank.

He’s 51, medication is just pain relief I believe, as he has somehow fractured a rib,

hes currently 56kilos, eating small amounts well trying to throughout the day, he went in to have gullet dilated but had an infection,

he had chemo before and after surgery, and radiotherapy after.

Hi I think I had 2 ribs removed on the right side I think sometimes it takes a while for them to heal. It's normal to be given lansoprazole to inhibit acid production I've been told that I will be on them for life. So I don't know if that would help, maybe someone who's had the same treatment as him will be able to give you better advice. I do hope you get some answers and he starts to recover soon. Kind regards Frank.

I was diagnosed with Barrett's last August.  Cancer was just confirmed 2 weeks ago. Delay in treating because they found the bsrrets while checking my heart...triple bypass. However, to your question  I have not had any surgeries,  and have lost 147 lbs in 7 mos. I am not trying, and the weight loss is rapidly increasing.  I am sure this is due to my esophagus making food hard to eat. Something does not seem right. He should be gaining after the surgery.
