Hi everyone,
I am posting really to ask something.
I had a barium swallow today as the consultant was checking I not got osophagus cancer.
Can I ask how long after your tests to see if you have cancer do they let you know, i am thinking if they saw any cancer signs they would of rang me the same day? Or do they take a few days?
How long after getting a test done did you get told you had signs of cancer.
Its playing on my mind. Keep thinking I must be okay cos not heard anything but also don't wanna hold onto false hope.
Thanks for reading.
Hi, I had an endoscopy in a day clinic in Edinburgh and was told within 45 minutes that I had a tumour. I wasn't expecting to be told that quickly and had went on my own. I think it depends on where you live as to how they tell you. Do not worry yourself into the grave just yet and try to remain positive it really does help. Good luck and kind regards Frank.
Hi the_quiet_goth,
In my case I was told the same day of the endoscopy; was waiting for the results at the hospital whilst those before me went in to the results room and came out very quickly, discharged, and on their way... I'll never forget the nurse coming over to me and asking if there was anybody with me...my wife was just outside so we were ushered in and told that they were 99% certain I had cancer of the oesophagus; was put on the "ten day rule" and by day six they had rung me to confirm the worst...I was 49 years old at that time...that was January 2016 and here I am 3 years and 2 days since my oesophagectomy living (and loving) life to the full !!
I do hope you receive the news you want from your test, however if it's not quite what you wanted to hear, please don't despair...there is a way forward in most cases if discovered soon enough...I, and others on here, are living proof of that.
Very best wishes,
Kev.
Hi Kev & Frank,
Do you think it will be the same kinda thing time wise for a barium swallow, that I would get results same day or soon after? I didn't have a endoscopy, I had a barium swallow instead.
I didn't have a endoscopy, I had a barium swallow. So will that make it longer to get results or the same amount of time?
I've never heard of the barium swallow being used for oesophagus cancer. I had a barium swallow about 40 years ago to check for a duodenal ulcer. Try writing down your questions and have a pen and paper with you to write down answers. If you don't understand anything ask for clarification. I'm not an expert but it might be worth checking with the hospital what the procedure was checking for. Good luck and kind regards Frank.
Hi,
They told me their were checking for osaphagus cancer. Apparently it can be diagnosed by a endoscopy or a barium swallow & cos I wasn't keen on endoscopy they did the barium swallow..
Hi ,
After my initial request at my nhs GP due to several swalling issues...and then going for a nandoscopy....and them finding nothing...I then persisted and went private....the ENT SPECIALIST did another nandoscopy ...and wrote to confirm ' nothing sinister to worry about '....I refused this diagnosis and asked him for another test.....it was a Barium swallow....I went too see him for the results a week after and new immediately from his sheepish manner that there was an issue.....he then sent me for an immediate endoscopy to a fellow professor ...and my journey began...
Diagnosis and timing are everything. IF you are not happy keep pushing ...
Best Wishes
Pete
Hi Pete,
I am so glad you persisted & didn't give up after the first test. I hope you're doing better now & I wish you all the best.
Did your doctor say it can take a week to get the results from a barium swallow? Or did they get the results sooner but you had to wait a week for the appointment?
Claire.
Hi quiet goth, I don't think anyone would look forward to the endoscopy but I know that I was keen for a diagnosis so just decided to grin and bear it. As I said earlier, I got the results in about 45 minutes so I then knew that I was going to have to get myself into a positive state of mind. I seen in Pete's post even after the barium swallow he still had an endoscopy. I think you can get it done fully sedated as opposed to local anaesthetic. I hope everything goes well for you, kind regards Frank.
