My husband started his post op Flot 9 days ago. He is completely exhausted, has no appetite and has lost half a stone. He was making good progress following surgery but this has really set his recovery back. He is breathless, experiencing more pain and for the first time since being diagnosed on New Year’s Eve is feeling very down. IIt is awful to watch him being this way and like others on here I’m not sure how he will cope with 3 more sessions. He saw his oncologist a few days after the chemo who prescribed additional pain relief and steroids which have helped a little.
After surgery test showed he had an almost total response to the pre op Flot with only a microscopic amount of the tumour remaining. His next session is 28 June and unless he he gets much worse will probably go for it. Just not sure what to do after that. He says he will do what he is told by the doctors but maybe he should do what his body is telling him to do. I know it is not unusual to struggle with this post op chemo and others have experienced worse symptoms which hopefully he won’t have after cycle 2 and maybe it is too soon to even think about not continuing.
With the pre op chemo symptoms gradually got worse with each cycle and I’m wondering if this will be the same or has anyone who completed all 4 found the 1st cycle the worse?
Hi,
Im sorry to hear that your husband is suffering.
As you know post op chemo is much harder than pre op.
i sailed through 3 cycles of ecx pre op. But when it came to post op chemo I was an emergency admission two days into the first cycle. It took more out of me than the surgery did, but actually, much to everyone’s surprise having been at deaths door I bounced back. But they said no more chemo!
five years on I’m doing just fine!
Counting the days, making every day count.

Hi PLF19,
As BrentS says, post-op chemo is much worse than pre-op chemo. I completed 4 rounds of FLOT, surgery, and another 4 rounds of FLOT last year. I'm now in remission! But the last 4 rounds of FLOT were very hard for me. I tried to walk a mile or 2 every day and eat a high calorie diet. I needed mental strength to complete the second cycle (4 rounds) of FLOT and was very poorly after completion. only 40% of patients can complete the second cycle.
I still get out of breath easily probably due to my lung being collapsed for 6 hours during surgery? But I'm receiving physiotherapy now at my cancer unit in hospital 7 months after i have completed treatment and using exercises and techniques they have taught me my breathlessness is recovering quicker and quicker.
Hoping your husband can complete his second FLOT cycle.
Hi
Thank you both, my husband has improved since the weekend and will be well enough to undertake cycle 2 on Friday if his bloods are ok. Eating better but having sufficient calories is difficult due to the useful affect of the chemo on taste. Hopefully cycle 2 will be no worse but if it’s anthing like his pre op Flot they did get progressively harder. The positive things is he will have had 2 post op cycles, anymore will depend how he is but at least we are on the way to completely this journey.
