  • Hi

I don’t have oesophageal cancer but am one of MacMillan’s community champions, normally covering the various breast cancer forums. I noticed you hadn’t had a response, and as I have benefited from immunotherapy for my own cancer, I hope you don’t mind me responding.

I don’t know which immunotherapy drug your husband is on (my experience is of pembrolizumab) but the most common ones are a class of drug called checkpoint inhibitors. They target a particular protein on the tumour or a protein on the immune system that the tumour is binding to, and disable it. The idea being the immune system is then able to address the cancer. Unfortunately they disable whatever it is they are designed to disable systemically throughout the body, and that can lead to side effects.

Hopefully your husband’s team can bring his liver levels into range so he can continue treatment.
