Hi.
I’m new to this group and hoping it’s ok I am here and not intruding as I haven’t had official diagnosis. I’m a 41 year old Mother and struggling.
I am currently awaiting an endoscopy as they suspect I have oesophageal cancer but it’s not until the 14th Feb. I have the obvious symptoms though of increased reflux and food sticking in my throat and losing weight (although this is mainly due to reflux making it hard to eat) and I have a history of some on and off reflux.
I’m struggling immensely with anxiety but also the fact that something, presumably the cancer, has suddenly caused literally constant acid reflux so can’t get any relief from it (it’s like I’m completely broken) it’s so bad it’s caused oesophagitis and sores in my throat over the last three weeks (I felt fine 3 weeks ago and could swallow). It’s definitely made the swallowing worse too I think as could eat more when this first started than can now.
I have tried all the usual lifestyle changes and taken lansoprazole for a week and then been on Omeprazole 40mg for 12 days (under GPs advisement) and had copious amounts of Gaviscon advance but nothing helps.Thats when the GP referred me for the endoscopy which is good but there’s nothing else been offered. It’s just going all the time!
I can only manage 1000 calories a day because it makes me feel so unwell, I can’t sleep, and too much movement is not great. I’m worried this is going to break me before I even get my diagnosis or I will get an infection or not be able to get treatment because of the damage or not being strong enough. Or if they can even do the endoscopy!
I’ve tried to find help online but no one seems to have had this and I feel so helpless and alone! Has anyone had this and could anything be done?
I presume ppis don’t work because it’s structural.I have twelve days until the scan and then however long after that to results.
Also how do you cope with the anxiety of waiting. I keep shutting down which isn’t good for my family?
Thank you for reading if you made it this far.
Hi Amma
it sounds like you are suffering. It is a long journey that has several times that you have to ‘wait’ and that seems like an eternity. If you feel you are getting worse maybe speak to the doctor again and tell him then maybe he can prescribe something else or contact the hospital to try and speed the endoscopy. I hope you get seen soon. This site is great for advice and support throughout the OC journey

Hi Amma. The wait anxiety is something we have all been through. I can only suggest you ring the hospital and see if you can speak to the Upper GI specialist nurse and see if she/he can help you speed up the process or at least suggest something to help you at present. All my best wishes
Hi Amma,
So sorry to hear what an awful time you are going through. When I was having swallowing difficulties back in October 2023, I went to my GP who referred me for an endoscopy but warned that, due to waiting lists, it might take a few weeks to happen. I then contacted a private clinic, got an appointment with a consultant and had my endoscopy (plus a CT scan) two days later with the results confirmed a few days after that. Might be the best £1500 I ever spent as it prevented me from getting to the stage where I could barely swallow liquids. The waiting for all the tests to be completed, diagnosis confirmed and treatment to begin is very difficult. I hope that you can move things along a little quicker.

Sorry to hear your suffering it can be a long process to eventually get a diagnosis and a plan ! I had been suffering for several weeks awaiting a GP appointment then when I got to see him he gave me gaviscon which only made matters worse as it just made all this froth !! I eventually got sent for a barium meal which showed a blockage and was told they would contact me in due course ! I could not eat at all at this point so my doctor sent me to A&E on a Friday so given fluids and sent home to come back on Monday which I did, had to really persuade them to keep me in and eventually on the Thursday I managed to get a endoscopy. They could not get the camera down but still sent home !! And again they would contact me in due course .
So the following week I contacted the GI secretary about a appointment and she was fantastic and really got the wheels moving had so many phone calls after that and was admitted on the Friday and was seen by a fantastic registrar and the rest is history.
sorry to bore you with my story but don’t wait to be contacted see if you can get a earlier appointment you know your own body more than anyone! I wish you all the best xxx
Thank you for sharing your story. I may end up in hospital soon if this oesophagitis continues but they don’t seem to see it as urgent that it won’t stop. I’m holding out hope if can get diagnosis can get some different treatment that might help for a bit and at least will know where I stand but in the meantime so much damage is being done physically and mentally!
Hi Amma Hope everything goes really well, and they can put you on the right road.
