Hello,
My mum has s4 oesophageal cancer, she can only eat a few mouthfuls of pureed food for each meal. She extremely weak and ill. We are waiting for barium swallow but ot could be a month away.
Does anyone have experience of getting nutrition when she can't swallow?
Many thanks
Hi,
Don’t know if this any help, I also have oesophageal cancer although not stage 4, I have had flot chemo. Prior to that I was at the stage I could only swallow liquids. I have had a stent fitted and able to eat a reasonable diet now, but prior to that I found the best thing was complan which I got on prescription.
I'm sorry to read that your Mother is going through this. I also struggled to eat, switching to liquids only. However, I was concerned that eventually it would be difficult to swallow liquids so I spoke to the nutritionists who recommended a feeding tube. I had an NG tube, as a jej tube failed and caused sepsis (long story).
After 3 months and a bout of chemotherapy I was able to get the NG tube removed so now I can eat soft foods.
So speak to the hospital and try to get a tube fitted.
I hope all goes well.
