Lack of appetite

Hi everyone,

I had a bleed from my oesophageal tumour which resulted in me having a blood transfusion, radiotherapy to seal the tumour and 3 weeks in hospital where I lost about 3 stone in weight. I also experienced extreme sickness and obviously lack of appetite. Since this period my appetite has nosedived even more and I can only take in nutrition drinks and soups. I just cannot bear the thought of eating normally. This has been the case for about 8 weeks now and I wonder if anyone has had a similar experience and has there appetite returned.

Thanks in advance

Stephen

  • Hi Stephen. I have not had that experience but has anyone in your MDT discussed fitting an NJ feed tube to help you during this time ?

  • Not an option I’m afraid, I get enough calories from my protein drinks but dream about eating proper food.

  • Hello Stephen, will you be on treatment to reduce or remove the tumour? I've not read about anyone having a bleed from the OC tumour before. Lots of people on the forum or their loved ones have had issues with not being able to eat what they'd like or loss of appetite. Although my husband's treatment has stopped his problem with swallowing, 3 days into his 8th full cycle, he couldn't eat the curry he wanted, left over from what he'd made and eaten last night. However, he devoured the apple crumble our daughter had just made but had it with cold custard. The mucositis has kicked in again so he couldn't taste the curry. He could enjoy the taste of the dessert but needed the cold custard to counteract the pain from the hot crumble. Apologies for all the details about his meal tonight but just wanted to use this as an example of how much diet changes from one day to the next with OC.

I hope your appetite returns soon and you can start to enjoy eating again.

  • Thank you , I can swallow ok and always have but it’s loss of appetite for me . Hope your husband keeps well .

  • Hope u ok

  • How about you, Amman? How are you doing?
