Hello
I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer on 4th October since then I have been in hospital being fed on TPN as tumour has totally blocked by oesophagus, I have now had a J tube fitted and so now home !
I had my oncology appointment yesterday and they told me what to expect I’m to have 4 sessions of FLOT over 8 weeks and then scans etc if all good surgery followed by more chemo
I know it seems silly in the grand scheme of things but I don’t really want to loose my hair and wanted to know if anyone has used a cold cap and did it work?
Many Thanks
Apparently (according to Sir Chris Hoy) the cold cap is excruciating and not guaranteed to work. I had the FLOT regime and lost a bit of hair but not all of it
Thank you I’ve been to frightened to watch his program ! I have found this group very informative with so many positive stories. Good to hear you did not loose all your hair mine is quite thick so fingers crossed !
Everybody’s experience with hair loss seems to be slightly different. My head hair certainly thinned a bit but I didn’t lose it all. My wife just took the dog clippers and gave me a #4 all over. The rest of my body hair remained. Oddly enough, the only place I lost all hair from was the inside of my nostrils.
Thank you for your reply ! Don’t think I’m brave enough to shave mine off but in the grand scheme of things losing my hair should be the least of my worries !
Hello Dibden doll. I'm sorry about your diagnosis. I understand that the cold cap is not suitable for people on certain types of chemo. Those with a side effect of peripheral neuropathy wouldn't be suitable because it causes extreme cold sensitivity and potential for long term nerve damage.
Best of luck with your treatment,
Lorraine
Thank you for replying this is all very new to me ! Will talk to a nurse when I get there but they seem to have their down sides ️
hi dibden doll, i did cold cap for breast cancer, thinned but kept my hair, then when this little sod arrived, am now doing the same again, 3rd chemo monday, if you google "look good feel better workshops" they have an amazing video of how to cold cap, also they advise dont just shave your hair off, as it can be re styled, i was pretty much told to cut my long hair short so when it fell out wouldnt be as traumatic, this was a breast cancer nurse, didnt mention cold capping once. yes it is cold but if you have company or are chatting does go quick, not comfortable but doo able
deffo look at paxman cold cap in google, how to prepare as some nurses on the chemo ward havent really used it a lot. you can always start then stop, i was told by chemo nurses on the ward persevere, as it would go, i just couldnt face any more loss, had right sudden masectomy, lost over a stone in weight so skeletal, the thought of looking even more different mentally would have sent me over the edge.
good luck and take care, look at the look good feel better, not by the nurses x
Thank you for your reply will look that up ! I’m having FLOT with home pump for the last 24 hrs is this what you had ?
