New diagnosis, laser treatment

I don’t have a lot of information as my partners sister has just been diagnosed with cancer and is an alcoholic. She has attended the appointment herself and just come back and told us she has it, no mention of staging but has said she is going in next Friday to have laser treatment to remove the cancer? From what I have read online this isn’t a treatment to try to cure the cancer but a palliative treatment to help the symptoms of swallowing?
her body is not in good condition and she’s been a heavy drinker since teenage years and is now early 50s, she also smokes. She was in hospital 2 weeks ago as she was being sick and throwing up blood, she signed herself out after 2 days. We have no idea if this treatment is being offered because it is too advanced or if it because her body could not take an operation or chemo?
also has anyone else had this before an operation or chemo? As we have no idea if this is the order they treat it in?
Any thoughts would be helpful. She won’t let us attend any appointments with her or speak to doctors.

  • Hello Remi,

I haven't read anywhere about laser treatment being offered for oesophageal cancer.

Cancer Research UK and the NHS site are both good sources of information, as well as Macmillan and all the people going through treatment or supporting those who are.

I hope you find some answers.

    Kind wishes,

    Lorraine

  • Thank you for the reply. I did find laser treatment mentioned on cancer research site

    https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/oesophageal-cancer/treatment/decisions-about-your-treatment/

    and on this one

    https://www.gastrolondon.co.uk/oesophageal-laser-therapy/#:~:text=Oesophageal%20laser%20treatment%20is%20not,term%20outcome%20of%20the%20disease

but again they seem to imply it’s a palliative treatment as it doesn’t remove all the cancer cells but makes swallowing easier.

we are at a loss as we don’t really have much of a clue what’s happening. We do know now that on Friday after the laser treatment she’s having.PET scan.

  • Hi,

I'm surprised to hear that she is receiving treatment so soon as from your last message she hasn't had all her scans yet. Usually what happens is you get the diagnose, have a PET scan and CT scan and then see your oncologist. It usually takes around 3 months before any treatment of any kind starts as bloods and all information needs to be gathered first.

Was this her first time seeing anybody?

I will try and give as much information as I can from our own personal experiences if that helps you.

I wish you all the best on this terrible journey.

    Kayleigh.

  • A few weeks ago she said she was going for some scans at the hospital as her liver wasn’t right, she told us they were testing for cancer. At this point we all thought liver cancer. She had a CT scan, camera down into tummy and camera in bowel.
Then 2 weeks ago she ended up being admitted into hospital because she was vomiting blood. They did another CT scan then on the 2nd day but she then signed herself out.
The other day she came round and said she’d been at the hospital and the biopsy they took when they put the camera down into her tummy showed cancer and that it was oesophageal. No mention of staging. At this point she told us about the laser therapy.
Now yesterday she’s said she’s having the PET scan after the laser therapy and that she will be having radiotherapy soon.
We live in the Isles in Scotland so our hospital only has limited equipment, we have a CT but not an MRI or PET or anything so since they are taking her to the mainland for the laser therapy next week then it seems likely they will do the PET scan then.
It’s hard to get an info out of her but she seems to be dripping a bit more every day. I am assuming they found the cancer on the CT and camera and confirmed with biopsy but since she was admitted vomiting blood and they CT scanned her again it may be quite advanced. There has been no mention of an operation.
Thank you for replying and helping.
