Hi everyone,

We've been hit with the news that my Dad has been diagnosed with this

One positive is it's not spread to anyone else.

However we've been told no to the surgery.

He's 80 but fit and healthy before this. Yes he's lost weight and eating has become a problem in recent weeks.

We have a meeting with the oncologist this week

Anyone advice for what we should read about before or ask about?

Anyone experience of being in your 80s and what you were told?

I'm not giving up and neither is he x

  • Sorry to hear about your dad.  Macmillan provide a booklet on this horrible disease and should give you all the information you need about it. I had the Ivor Lewis operation last year at the age of 80. My best non medical advice is as follows: Ensure you are getting his treatment at a major cancer centre with abundant facilities. It is worth travelling to achieve this. I read a few comments on here of people waiting for results or not getting support. This simply does not happen in a major teaching  hospital. Obviously explore in detail why he is not being offered an operation as this cannot be age related alone and must be because of other medical factors. The treatment for this disease can take many routes as you will read about on this site and there is no point in me commenting further at this stage but please come back to me if you need more info. on the route to the operation and beyond. I wish you and your dad all the very best .

  • So sorry to hear of your Dad’s diagnosis. I would like to recommend some reading to you.

The most comprehensive literature that I recommend is the NICE guideline on oesophageal and gastric cancer. No. NG83 This has been prepared in language understandable to not only health professionals but aimed at patients, their families and carers too.

Another source of information is the Cancer Research UK websites

I am in a similar position to your Dad - diagnosed with local disease but not fit for surgery.

  • Thank you that's very useful feedback. I certainly will ask again about the surgery. They've just said it's because it's such a big surgery but they never mentioned the Ivor Lewis one which i had read about.

Do you mind me asking what area you are in for your hospital?

  • Thank you, I'll have a look at that, sending you all our love x

  • I attended Southampton University Hospital.
