I am posting on behalf of my father he had his surgery 3 weeks ago he had part of his oesophagus removed and 2/3 of his stomach.

I am posting to see if anyone has any advice to aid him in his recovery he was 9 days in ICU as he got pneumonia he only spent 4 days on the ward before being discharged and is finding it difficult at home particularly with eating any tips or advice gratefully received.

Thank you so much

  • Hi - if you look under the thread 'post op journey' in the 'new here' section there is quite a lot of comment on exactly this subject from a number of contributors  If he is having really serious problems he would best be talking to his specialist nurse at the hospital as he must still be under their follow up supervision and they would only be a phone call away.

  • Thank you for your reply I have found the thread

  • Hopefully there is something of interest there. Milk shakes seem to be favoured along with simple combinations of mash potato with something like a poached egg. If he can't keep it down then seek help. I actually had a medical problem at this stage and had a food tube inserted for a few weeks but this was an unusual event as I understand it.

Let us know how he gets on.

  • Thank you daddy has a feeding tube and he gets a feed overnight this is standard procedure for the hospital he had his operation in so he is not feeling hungry at his stage he is managing a couple of spoonfuls teaspoons of food 3 or 4 times a day it's just hard to know if it's enough I appreciate everyone is individual the community nurse will be back out on Wednesday and I've been logging a food diary

Thank you for taking the time to reply I appreciate it.
