Hello all,
It's been some time since I visited, just been trying to get on with life, but life had other ideas it seems.
My husband had an Ivor Lewis Oesophagectomy 26th June 2023, a date I'll never forget, and he was recovering well until the burps and reflux really hit him about 6 months ago.
It starts just after he wakes up until he goes to bed. He doesn't burp when he's asleep and that is our only respite. I say our because we are both trying to deal with the mental struggle of this. It sounds silly but his burping all day every day leaves him totally exhausted and me mentally exhausted. I feel like screaming at him 'will you just stop!!' but he can't help it. I'm sure it could be used as torture.
When they operated they removed a valve and muscle that pushes food through to his digestive system and also stops stomach acid going back up into his oesaphagus. He's lost over 7 stone since surgery.
Anyway, he's been referred to a gastroenterologist, but there is a long waiting time. He has been prescribed a few medications my husband hasn't yet had which he will try whilst waiting for an appointment. He will try anything right now.
I've read through comments on here trying to find someone having the same problem. I've found nothing. So if there is anyone that has had this problem.or similar please advise.
For everyone else, patient or partner/carer, make no mistake, the road you have ahead of you may be long and hard. But stay positive and you will get through.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Mel
Hi Mel
This sounds extremely distressing for both you and your husband.
I'm not a member of this forum but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list.

Morning!
It was worth a try posting on here, just thought there might be someone that has experienced similar and could give any advice, though I actually hope there isn't anyone in many respects!
Thanks for the 'bump', much appreciated.

HI Mel
My partner has this also, hes 2 years post op .. weve tried everything somedays are better than others an I hate bedtime because of it i cant get to sleep and ive to work so very stressful. He has tried all the tablets etc but sometimes I think it happens when he eats too much thats the main issue or if h eats too late thats when it happens in bed.
Sorry I have no solution but thought I would comment incase anyone else can add to this. x
