Evening all

I have used this platform on numerous occasions throughout my dads journey with stage 3 oesophageal cancer and it has always been an immense comfort so figured it may help for this next stage.

My dad is booked in for his oesophagectomy tomorrow & I am so worried about complications / what this is going to look like. He is 57, in great shape & has done wonderfully so far so I know he has a lot in his favour. But, never the less, saying goodbye to him yesterday has left me in immense worry of the “what ifs”.

I’m not even sure what the risks are (and have avoided google at all costs), I just feel very in the unknown and not sure what to expect.

anyone with any coping advise or words of encouragement / their experiences are so welcome. Thanks as always

  • Hi Dean

  • Hi dean, I’ve been thinking about u a lot recently! How are you getting on? Hope you’re home and recovering well! …. My dad goes in for his operation on Friday and we are all worried to death! But your old comments are keeping me positive xxx

  • Hello all,

My dad is going in for his surgery tomorrow and I found myself back on here trying to prepare myself for what’s to come. Comforted to read all the posts and about Dean’s progress. I’m feeling so nervous about it all but it’s reassuring to read through all these threads

Christina, I hope your dad is doing well now

    xxx

  • Thinking of you tomorrow !! Andy (husband) is a little behind your dad so I'm interested to hear what lies ahead for him !! Andys had 3rd chemo and this one has hit him hard. ! What a journey everyone is having it's good to share them .

  • Thank you so much. What a coincidence, mine is also an Andy. I’ll keep you posted and I do hope your Andy can ride the wave out for this difficult round of chemo. It’s so hard but usually does subside after a few days. Sending lots of strength your way xx

  • Hi Nic

It's going quite well thanks. Most of the pain has gone but eating and drinking is proving tricky. Some foods are fine others definitely not as have experienced a bit of dumping which is quite painful but thankfully didn't last long. Still get tired quickly but sleeping at night is good.

Surgeon called and said they managed to get all the cancer out and only one out of 68 lymph nodes removed was bad.

I see my oncologist consultant on Feb 15th to see what's next, probably more chemo.

Try not to worry about your dad it is difficult I know but these surgeons are amazing and he will be well looked after.

Will be thinking of you and hope it goes well

    Best wishes

  • Hi IP20

I'm sure the surgeons will do their very best for your dad. They are so good at what they do. My op was 5 weeks ago and was only in hospital for a week.

To prepare yourself, your dad will be very sore and tired afterwards but that gets better each day. The nurses are brilliant and they will keep your dad as comfortable as possible.

When he gets home the eating and drinking maybe a challenge for a while, it was for me although it is getting better now. He will only be able to manage small portions at first and only soft food but the nutritionist will explain it all.

    Hope it all goes well

    Best wishes

  • Hello Dean,

Thank you for the reassurance, it’s definitely comforting. I read your message to my dad today and it reassured him also.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow and sending you lots of strength as you continue your recovery.

    Very best,

    Illy

  • Hi Paly

My op went very well thank you, they got all the cancer out and only 1 out of 68 nodes was bad. Surgeon was brilliant and he was very happy with the results so if he is happy guess that's a good sign.

See my oncologist consultant next Thursday 15th February to see how much chemo I will need to make sure it's all gone.

Hope you are doing ok, let me know what stage you are at and how it's going

    Best wishes

    Dean

  • Hi Illy

You are very welcome. It is very daunting when having a big op but the surgeons are incredible and very skilful and they always do what's best for the patient.

I hope when you read this that your dad's op went well and wish him a speedy recovery.

It's a learning curve for me after the op but if I can help you and your dad in any way I will.

You will have great support from the cancer team too and if there are any problems speak to them, they are amazing too.

    Best wishes

    Dean
