Hi

My husband had an esophagectomy 6 weeks and had an anastomotic leak one week after operation. He is getting better now and had a feeding tube fitted yesterday into his nose. Previously he had feeds via a vein in his picc line. He has been nil by mouth for 5 weeks now but is slowly recovering,

Hopefully he will be home in a couple of weeks. Just wondering how people have got on with a feeding tube at home, if anyone can help.

Its been a very hard road since he was diagnosed in December but hopefully now there is light at the end of a tunnel.

  • Hi….mmy husband came home with a NJ tube (up through his nose and down into his jejunum)   It seemed very complicated and a bit scary in case we got it wrong…but it was fine….within a day or two you get into a routine of flushing the line and connecting the feed.  we had a lesson on the ward before he came home. the instructions with the equipment were very clear. everything was delivered (lot of boxes of feed, sterile water, syringes so need somewhere to store them) and it really was nothing to worry about (but we did beforehand) and …only natural,

Take a day at a time.  look back on how far he has come….its a long journey but as you say he,s on the mend…all the best to you both.

  • Thank you for your reassurance. We are having a lesson at the hospital next week and have started to make some space in our garage for all the equipment.
Thank you for answering my question, all the best.

  • We had training before my husband came out of hospital for both the NG and JEJ ..You should also be given a pamphlet to read ..Full of info about the pump ..The flushes and enteral feeding in general ..It’s all pretty straightforward once you become used to it …

Pleased to hear your husband is improving and Hope he’s home soon

    regards J
