Oesophageal Cancer Diagnostic Process

Hi, my husband has just been told that he has oesophageal cancer after months of swallowing problems and heartburn. He has had an endoscopy and biopsy but the biopsy results aren’t conclusive as to which type of oesophageal cancer he has. We have only spoken to one of the team of doctors briefly over the phone and said they need to do a repeat biopsy which has been booked for 14th July and that he will need a PET scan but we have not been given a date for the PET scan. I’m very worried that everything seems to be taking a long time to do the tests and get the results. Should we be ringing the hospital to arrange the PET scan or will they contact us? How long does it usually take to get a diagnosis, staging and begin treatment?

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • I‘m sorry not to be able to answer the question about timing but I would chase the appointment up. And I’m sorry you find yourself in this position. I’m in a difficult situation with my dear dad, same cancer.

  • Hi

I was in your position May/June last year and although oncology was local the operation was done in London.  I found the process was relatively quick, although we all want immediate answers and treatment!

I had my endoscopy in May, followed by scans and had my staging and treatment plan mid June.  Within two weeks I meet my oncologist and chemo started about two weeks later.  I was lucky I kept being warned how busy they were and it could take longer but everything feel into place for me.

I hope it all goes well for you

  • Thank you, that’s very reassuring. Hope everything is going well for you now.
