My partner will be coming home with a NJ feed tube after being told his cancer of the oesophagus has come back and says that they are unable to do any more surgery but recomending chemo?  Anyone been through this....any advice about feed tube hes already had 2 fitted but both came loose.

  • Hello, in 2018 I had Oseophagus cancer and had a Oseophagetomy. After that I had 15 dilations and a stent put in. This all failed by narrowing. I had problems eating and drinking. So in June 2022 I had a JEJ Tube fitted. I've had a couple of problems with it , stitching falling out and pain. I use the tube and feed 20 hours a day.

  • Hi there Allan12 I have stage 4 Oesophageal cancer and I am suffering with dramatic weight loss. Can I ask who did you discuss having a feeding tube fitted with as my oncologist or GP have not mentioned having one fitted.

  • Firstly I had various surgery on my stomach and oseophagus which meant I couldn't have a gastro tube, I had to have a jej tube, I suggest you speak firstly to your GP, tell them if you cannot swallow, get a gastroscopy done to check inside , oseophagus etc, if you need a feeding tube put in your gastro consultant should mention it when you see them.i had the Macmillan Dietician and various gastroi consultant suggest I need one,  But be sure you want you want one, it will affect your life alot, things will change, it is not easy having one. See your GP , and consultant and suggest that you need one.

  • Hi

My partner did not have a choice it was put in, while in hospital after being admitted for dehydration and not eating.  But only have one if you really need to, as it has been  trouble since been in, with having no stomach it can soon come out and also it gets blocked as well and in both cases have to be admitted to hospital to have the problem solved.  He his not happy at the moment.

    Have you tried ensure drinks?

  • I had to have, unable to have liquid and solids, I have to cope with the problems, there is the nutricia nurse and consultant and Macmillan to help..

  • Hi redrose I really do no not know what alternative I have regarding my weight loss I may only have to need it for a short time as I can eat but it is only small amounts. My dietitian is really good and trying to help me has much has she can. Thank you for replying. xx

  • Hi Allan12 thank you for replying I like you think it will be a case of having to cope with it as I don’t have much more of a choice.

  • Hi My husband had one fitted two weeks ago . Oncologist didn’t request it but Nurses did as he was only managing teaspoon at a time when eating . First one didn’t work but touch wood the second one is doing the trick . Feeds for 10 hours at night and although told to sit up can usually manage his right side now which is better for him .. Please contact me if you need any more info ...we are all learning together xx

  • Hello Madsy, So sorry to hear he had another tube fitted. I have to see my consultant on Tuesday, Pain around site and wrong type of stitches were used, they used dissolve ones instead of permanent, they kept falling out. Consultant putting new stitching in and have CT Scan.bi use my JEJ for 20 hours day. Good luck for your husband.
