Hi,
I have been making my Husband 2 types of smoothies, which he has every day. One with berries, banana, milk and chai seeds. The other with Spinach, avocado, 1/2 banana & apple, milk and chai seeds. Just wondering if there is thing else I should be adding to them, or different ones to try. I am so worried that I am not providing the correct nutrients, even though with these, soup and the shakes from the nutritionist he's around his daily goals they have given him. He's over his ideal weight, but should I be using full fat milk and not worry about the calories (at moment we are using skimmed milk). He's are the tests stage, so no treatment taking place yet.
Any advice is very welcome.
Thanks,
Di
Hey Goldie, Check out my profile I have listed a number of juices that my friend who owns a juicing shop recommended to me. From what I can see in your list you are doing a great job :) My wife makes for me a smoothie with the protien shake, a banana, full fat milk and peanut butter/nutella. Here is a great book which was recommended to us Crazy Sexy Juice: 100+ Simple Juice, Smoothie & Nut Milk Recipes to Supercharge Your Health : Carr, Kris: Amazon.co.uk: Books if the link doesn't work search for crazy sexy juice in amazon its written by a lady who has had stage 4 cancer for years and done loads of research into the best nutrients to fight the disease. All of the recipes are blended and they are great :)
Hi Vinny,
Thank you so much for your message. I'm so sorry that you are going through this. Your profile has so much excellent information, thank you for sharing. I'll certainly try some of the juices, it'll be good to add a bit of variety :) I've also order the book you recommend.
Many thanks,
Di
Hi Di, my husband has just finished his 1st round of FLOT chemo and prior to that he wasn’t able to eat, we tried many smoothies along side the ensure shakes from the dietitian but if you husband isn’t managing solids I recommend looking into a stent or NG feeding tube. The difference in sean from he got his NG was fab! He hooked up every night but you can get a backpack so you can split feeds up during the day & still be mobile. He got so much energy back and was able to do so much more with us. It obviously comes with downsides such as the feeding tube is in his nose so you can see it, but as you’ve to wear masks anyway no one noticed when out. It’s also annoying having to hook up every day but the good out ways the bad. Regarding the smoothies I also added cod liver oil & spatone iron - both liquid forms to every smoothie for extra measures! Liz xxx
Hi Liz, thank you so much for your message. I hope Sean is doing well after his fist round of FLOT. I also hope that you are OK too Liz. My husband can eat some things, weirdly Protein and Fiber bars, which I thought would have been hard to swallow. Cake and biscuits don't seem to be a problem either. He tends to stick to porridge, soup, smoothies etc so as not to irritate anything and says he feels fine at the moment. We are still at the diagnoses stage, with a PET test tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion of the NG feeding tube and stent, we'll look into those. It's good to know what available and can help, as we are so new to this. I'll get some cod liver oil & spatone iron too.... anything that is going to help.
Take care,
Di x
Oh good luck with everything! The fact your getting a PET scan is really good, not everyone has access to that and it gives a very clear reading of what’s what. I felt reassured that we had one & the medical team had a clear vision of what needs doing! Fingers crossed everything goes to plan sean will have surgery 13th Jan, then when he recovers another round of FLOT. It’s a very stressful time & your mind is never far away from all this unfortunately so I send you lots of love as it’s not easy. Yes somehow sean still managed cheesecakes & ice cream, everytime I looked he was scoffing some! Keep an eye on his weight, sean let it go too long and ended up in hospital - if you notice massive dips in energy & too much weight loss speak to your UGI nurse as they need all their energy to fight this! The good news is it’s just short term, after 2 rounds of chemo sean’s eating improved massively & now he’s back to eating chicken, pizza, fish etc and he’s building up lots of weight before surgery as we know it will drastically drop over the next few months. I wish you both well on this journey ahead and please feel free to message me anytime if you have any questions as it seems we just ahead of you on this all so anything I can help with let me know xxxc
Thank you so much Liz. I am so pleased that I found this forum as before I felt completely lost.
I read your profile and see you have young children. How are they doing? It must have been so hard telling them. We have a 15 year old daughter. We are waiting until after Christmas and once we know what is happening we will tell her, but I'm dreading it.
It's so good to hear that Sean can eat all those things. Not long before the operation now either. I hope that you and your family can have a lovely Christmas and lots of good food for Sean xxx
I’m still new to this all but I’ve sent a friend request to you on this as I think that’s how we can message each other on here privately without it being on main dashboard. My eldest daughter is also 15, my son is 13 & youngest 10… we waited until we had all the tests & facts before telling them also, it’s for the best, though I’m sure very hard for you. Hopefully you get my request xxxx
