Hi we have Neils appointment with the oncologist next Thursday morning and wondering what questions we need to ask?
Neil has been told surgery not an option as his cancer advanced and aggressive so we are aware that any treatment is palliative but need to know what we should be asking.

Take care and thanks if you can help us with this x

  • Hi  ,

I’m so sorry you find yourself needing to use this forum.

In 2018 if was initially diagnosed T4N2M? for Oesophageal cancer. After exploratory surgery they found my tumour was resting on my diaphragm and my cancer had not spread to my diaphragm. This changed my staging to T3N2M0 and my proposed treatment plan from palliative to curative.

So I did prepare some questions for my palliative treatment:--

    1. Are there any clinical trials you can get me on (this may possibly be curative, but will help future patients)?
    2. How long have I got (the doctors never like answering this one but you need to know if they expect you to live less than 6 months as this can have financial implications on your pension etc)?
    3. What further tests do you plan for me?
    4. What pain management do you plan for me?
    5. What treatment plan do you propose for me?
    6. How frequently do I need to come to hospital?
    7. Can I have the contact details of my CNS (Clinical Nurse Specialist, phone and email)?
    8. Can I have full disclosure (if you want to know everything)?
    9. Should I be considering hospice care?
    10. What extra equipment to I need in my home to continue living there?

    I hope this helps?

    All the best.
