My mum got through her 6 weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy without any side effects at all, although the fatigue started to creep in towards the end. Since the treatment has finished however all of the nasty side effects have hit her. First she was exhausted and sleeping most of the day, and for the last 2 weeks she has been so sick, has no appetite at all and is just bringing everything back up. I have spoken to the nurse as mum says she can’t take much more of feeling like this, and they have advised to increase her dexamethasone from 1mg to 2mg. I just really hope this works as I hate to see her so poorly and also wanted her to enjoy the break she has from treatment, as the chemotherapy will begin again at the end of august. Has anyone else experienced similar side effects?
I am so scared of what is still to come on this horrible journey. Sending love to all of you going through the same x
I just wanted to add that she also complains of horrible smells often. Has anyone else experienced this?
HI Justlooking.
Sorry to hear your mum's struggling now with the side effects. Fatigue was the only one my husband suffered but the treatment did mess with his sense of taste. He never mentioned his sense of smell being altered, just his sense of taste but it eventually returned to normal.
The dex seems to work small miracles so I hope tweaking the dose gives her some relief. If you feel she needs a longer break before starting the chemo, talk to the oncologist. I'm pretty sure they would rather she was in bet possible shape before starting the chemo and a delay of a week or two might not be the end of the world here.
This is a rollercoaster ride. It's gruelling at times but you'll get through it. We all will. Stay strong. Be led by what your mum wants.
Sending love and light and hugs

Sickness wise - I managed the 6 weeks of radio and chemo together ok without issue (other side effects hit for two weeks after completion). However I have just completed my first chemo round. Went without issue and completed the 5 days last Friday then spent all of last night feeling nauseous and throwing up. Not sure if chemo related and if others have found this?
So sorry to hear this about your mum. It does sound like upping the steroids is worth a go so hopefully that will help.
My wife had sickness but we switched anti-emetic to ondansetron and that worked wonders so might be worth a go if this persists. Though ondanstetron does cause constipation but you've just got to pick your battles at times.
And yes my wife still gets funny smells occasionally. She finds them difficult to describe but usually along the lines of burnt toast but with a chemical note to it. She's had them ever since diagnosis 13 months ago so apparently not a sign of impending doom at least!
Really hoping your mum's symptoms settle down soon.
Chris xx
Thank you for your reply. That’s a really good suggestion about asking for a bit more time before the next round of treatment starts. I’d love for my mum to be able to have some kind of ‘normal’ for a week or two. I hope you and your husband are doing well too. Take care xx
Thank you for your reply and I’m sorry to hear you are also going through this - sending you love and strength. I think the sickness seems to be related to the chemo. Are you having chemo for another 6 months? Take care xx
Thanks for the advice it really is appreciated. Those smells seem very similar to what my mum is experiencing and she has also had them since before diagnosis. She says there are a few different smells but none are very nice… burning, hospitals, and antibiotics!
Sending love to you and your wife xx
