Hi all, may 24 my gallbladder ‘played up’and in hospital over nite where the radiologist noted that malignancy needed to be ruled out—- nothing was said to me.

august it played up again and it was all systems go ,referred to a specialist nurse and all scans, mri, pet scan, biphasic scan said cancer at neck of gallbladder- T4 n1. Referred to Kings as the specialists and they wouldn’t operate due to effecting veins and hepatic artery.

First biopsy via guided scan only did the skin of gallbladder and didn’t think he got anything.

Second biopsy via stomach and aiming for ‘ blueberries in a muffin’ —- nothing.

Third via Kings and general anaesthetic —nothing —- just ill effects for a week and kept as inpatient.

Now ?. Await multi team thoughts and potentially open surgery though thought not feasible 10 weeks ago.

still being told that likely cancer will be found when removed.

Must admit my ‘ stoic’ mind set is struggling !

  • Hi, sorry to read your post, I can't really add anything other than I know what it's like when biopsies don't quite work and they have to go digging again, or one opinion can sometimes differ from the next regarding treatment plans.

However, it sounds like Kings are the experts and are now your team? I would say if you were referred to them then they are the best placed team for your case.

As for the MDT (multi disciplinary team) meeting, that's a good thing because the brightest minds in each department look at your case file and they all come together to make a decision and that's routine (sorry if I sound patronising I don't mean to).

Can I ask why you won't have any surgery for 10 weeks? That seems a very long time to wait and I'm sure added stress to your situation.

    Take care

    Colette

  • It was that Kings said wouldn’t operate 10 weeks ago to remove gallbladder because of the hepatic artery and veins being effected so whilst now know the biopsies haven’t found anything yet rather it’s a mass of ?  and still an uncertainty so I’m not sure why it’s now ok to remove gallbladder even with an uncertainty of histology after removal.

  • Oh I'm sorry I totally misread your post, stupid brain wasn't in gear.

Have you been given a nurse clinician or specialist nurse? I would ask Kings who you have been allocated to. If you haven't been allocated someone then I'd be ringing the consultants secretary and ask them to get answers for you.

Hopefully the MDT will have all the facts and someone can explain why surgery wasn't an option 10 weeks ago yet now it might be..
