Early retirement

Don't get me wrong, I lead an active and full life, I haven't given up by any means, but has anyone successfully gained early retirement due to ill health with a blood cancer diagnosis? I work in an environment of superspreaders and also have a very mentally stressful occupation. I have so much I want to do, but in a safer environment. Any advice gratefully accepted!

  • Interesting question.

I worked in Further Education for over 20 years and had already been living and working with my skin NHL for 12 years and as my condition was gradually getting worse over the final years and my appointments were two three times a week I jumped ship at 55 on a reduced pension with my lump sum.

I did try for early retirement on medical grounds. Put in the enquiry and was told my type of Lymphoma was not covered....... “as it was it seen as being life threatening”....!!!

There was no negotiation even with my teaching union getting involved.

I am now 9 years into retirement and have no regrets..... yes, 2 years into retirement my condition kicked off but it just made the post treatment choices and challenges more simple to navigate.

I did become self employed on retirement and as I was trained in production Joinery I did some small jobs and commissions.....

Do come back and tells us how you get on.

  • Thanks for the reply, what a ridiculous statement re your illness!! My friend has just got it with rheumatoid arthritis...mixed advice for me from the NAHT. I’m going to sound out my doctors I think before I make a move

    Best wishes to you
