Mid treatment

Hi All,

I am supporting my Dad through B-cell non Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He is 74 (almost 75).

He has had three rounds of R Chop and his mid treatment PET scan is showing CMR.
Which is great, however he is now so weak and hasn’t recovered at all from the third cycle and is struggling with muscle weakness, extreme fatigue and struggles to walk.
I am on hand to help and deliver food and take him to his appointments, have also managed to get him walking outside a little this week (supported).

He is now at a point where he isn’t sure if he wants to complete the treatment and focus on trying to re build strength and recover.
given his age. I want to support him with whatever decision he makes
any tips on how to help him re build strength?
I am thinking some form of physio?
I will ask his DR next week.

Thank you,

Abi

  • Hi Abi  being CMR at mid point is great……

My consultant said that this rather like taking antibiotics for an infection…… even if you feel great at mid point you need to complete the course as the remaining treatments consolidates on everything that has been done before…… even at CMR there is a small chance that some cells were not picked up.

As for building up his strength especially his muscle mass, you are doing all the right things…… small but regular activity is the best route….

The signs below are everywhere in my local Heamatology ward and clinic implying a week in bed is like ageing physically by 10 years….. and the recovery after this is much longer.

  • Thanks so much Mike. Really appreciate your advice.
I’ll keep trying to get him out for walks and in the fresh air - even if I am propping him up on the walks.

Hopefully that will lift his spirits too!

  • If you are in the UK you may want to check out Lymphoma Action.

Lymphoma Action is the main UK Lymphoma Specific Charity who have lots of good reliable information, videos..... basically all things Lymphoma....... pre, during and post treatment.

    They run various Support Platforms…

I highly recommend these groups as this will widen your support base and there is nothing better than ‘talking’ with others who have walked or are walking the same journey…… especially their monthly zoom group specifically for caregivers.

Their Closed FB group alone has 6000 members and unfortunately you would most likely bump into me on there also as I also volunteer with LA ;)

  • Hi,

that’s good news at the half way point but I’m not going to lie.

I done 6 rounds of Pola r chop and I was 55 I found the last 3 the hardest especially 5 and 6,I had no appetite and I also did not want to carry on ( but my family said it wasn’t an option and that I had to for them so I did - as although i was knackered and I felt sorry for myself I knew deep down I had to )  I got ensures drinks prescribed and made the most of the 5 days of each cycle I was prescribed steroids, I didn’t do much exercise and I am still paying for it,

so if you can get him some physio that would be good even just doing exercise in his chair is good just gentle stretches and when he’s in bed he could do some gentle exercise he doesn’t need to go over the top and if he doesn’t want to go out for a walk because he feels unwell then let him rest,

The best you can do is make sure he has healthy food  if he has an appetite and drinks plenty of fluids just be there  for him like you already are, he will soon feel better

. They won’t make him carry on with treatments if he is not well enough to cope with it but they can lower the dose, that’s totally your dads desision though.

ps I did not have  a complete response at the half way point but I am in remission now ThumbsupWishing your dad a full recovery Pray tone1

  • I’ll join up. I think my Dad could benefit from speaking to others - even just to boost his morale Relaxed

  • Aww thank you!
I’ll definitely look into some rehab exercises.
I managed to help him get out of the house twice last week - only for a ten minute walk (supported) but the fresh air hopefully helped.

Food has been an issue as he has no appetite and has lost a lot of weight but I’m making soups and stews and I know he’s trying.

Hopefully we can get him back to strength to discuss some more treatment soon as he has had a 6 weeks break.

thanks so much for your advice.. really appreciate it Relaxed

  • Your dad and you could sit in on the various monthly support groups.

  • I’ll speak to Dad and see if I can get him to attend.  I think it would be really helpful. Especially with morale.
