Hello I recently had my first round of GDPR Chemotherapy prior to starting stem cell transplant and I have never felt this bad before unable to sleep properly due to steroids I think struggling to eat anything  everything is tasteless and burns my throat and stomach and today almost non stop tachycardia.Any advice would be appreciated I had considered calling cancer team at my Hospital in desperation but I have a vein assessment tomorrow in Leeds and ideally want to be there for it.Daunting.

  • Hi again  and sorry to hear about the challenges you are dealing with.

During my salvage treatment and then through my 2 Allo (donor) Stem Cell Transplants I had lots of occasions where there was no taste to food…. although I was not experiencing any issues from eating….. my great CNS just kept reminding me that I had to forget about the temporary loss of taste and concentrate on getting fuel into my body…… and this, on the whole came from food.

The one thing that helped was before I had food I would suck on frozen, liquidised greasy pineapple that had been frazzled ice cube trays….. for me this tricked my taste buds and helped me eat.

You do need to talk with your clinical team, you need to build up in preparation for SCT as going off food is unfortunately one of the main challenges especially if you develop bad ulcers and lots of folks end up with a feeding tube…… I managed to keep clear if this.

I also developed A-Fib during the process.

  • Thanks again for the reply it's the burning sensation I can't deal with everything I try to eat has to be Room temperature but it's a real issue I had my last chemo on Wednesday gone and have dropped 4 kilos already ill be in touch with CNS team tomorrow to see what is the best course of action I eat ice lollies at times but even that is not easy.

  • My collection dates start 24th September and I'm worried I won't be fit enough to get through it all.

  • You need to express your concerns….. but your team would not go ahead with the SCT if they were anyway concerned that you were not in the position to go through it.

  • Maybe the feeding tube will be an option though I understand it's not without it's own issues it's a bridge I'll have to cross if it comes to it.

  • Definitely talk to your consultant/haematology/oncology nurses. Tell them what you're experiencing - all of it.
