Hi everyone,

I have been on treatment for CML for 4 years and have had some other health problems in the past few years too. The past couple months I have been feeling a lot better after a really tough year or two. I have applied to study abroad since I didn’t get to finish uni but my treatment might make that not possible. Idk if I’m getting ahead of myself but I really want to get back into education

  • Hi  and welcome to this little corner of the Community. I am Mike and I help out around our various blood cancer groups, I don’t have CML but have lived and been treated for my type of NHL for over 22 years now.

It sounds amazing to be looking to get back into education and doing this abroad, depending on your subject may well be a positive move….. but there is a but.

You need to ask some searching questions.

You need to have a good talk with your clinical team with regards to how they see your condition progressing over the time you would be abroad including any anticipated treatments and how this could be dealt with.

You need to look into Health Insurance as this has become very complicated with the UK being out of the EU so the old health reciprocal arrangements are not necessarily still in place.

The University you are looking at should have an International Students Application system in place.

I was a Lecturer in a FE College who took in many International students but everything was handled by our International Students department….. I retired 10 years back and we obviously were still in the EU so there never were any problems but I have no idea what is going on now.

You may want to call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, support and may be able to help you out.

    Always around to chat.

Hi Mike! Thank you so much for the reply.

I knew there would be complications but didn’t want to think about it til I got my offer. Also being excited/hopeful let to a lot of improvements personally but now I need a medical certificate which has made me have to think about it, and rightly so.

I have gotten in contact with my consultant and I’m waiting to speak to her to see what is possible in regards to treatment but doing more research on it has been a bit of a reality check.

Also having done some research into health insurance in the last couple of days I’ve realised this process might not be for me unfortunately.

Again, thank you very much. Kind Regards, T

  • You do need to keep your dreams going, can you finish your education in the UK and look to pack your rucksack and go abroad once you have finished this part of the journey Thinking

That’s Plan B and might have to think about going back into University in the UK. Going abroad was my was of getting into dentistry right now as I have my heart set on being a dentist.  Fortunately I do physically and mentally feel I am capable again but my treatment is lifelong so that is the biggest inconvenience right now

  • It’s all about developing the mindset that you are living with a chronic illness that is treatable unlike many other chronic conditions.

Keep pushing the doors and go for your your dream where ever the journey takes you.
