Hi, I'm new here & just needed some support. I was diagnosed with stage 1A cervical cancer last May, & had a total hysterectomy in June. All went great, I recovered quickly & any cancer had gone so no further treatment required. I had my 6 month check up in January & I received a letter 5 weeks later saying there was further abnormalities. I went back whilst they put dye in & further biopsies taken & the consultant has said there are further pre cancerous cells & I will need further surgery. I was so distressed I didnt ask any further questions about it & that was nearly 4 weeks ago now I am still awaiting the results. I am now making myself ill with the stress & worry, I've had to move in with my family I've got myself that anxious about it I'm just convinced I'm going to die now. I can't seem to find anything about further cancer cells after a total hysterectomy. Has anyone else been through this?

  • Hi Juney

So sorry to hear of your recurrence. There are definitely a few ladies on here who have experience of this also, and I'm sure they'll reply soon with their wonderful support. I've just finished my treatment and have to wait a further 2 months for an MRI to see if it's all clear so Im also very anxious atm, but coming on here and speaking to this great bunch helps me immensely. So keep chatting and hopefully you get answers to all your questions.

  • Hi Juney and welcome to the group.

I’m sorry to see you are so anxious, but completely understand why you would be. So, it’s abnormal cells which have been found, and it’s not a cancer recurrence, is that correct? You’ll just need to sit tight and wait for further information, which I know is horrible.

it is unfortunately always possible for pre cancerous abnormal cells to come back, and of course for cancer to recur. The hysterectomy is done to clear the abnormalities caused by the hpv virus, and the cancer,  but it doesn’t clear the virus which causes them so this can cause further issues. I think it’s very common to think that a hysterectomy is a cure all for everything, but in reality that’s not always the case, though I feel you’re rushing ahead with your anxiety in thinking you might die.

Some of us here, including myself, have had a recurrence of cancer at a higher stage than your original diagnosis, and are still here! Please don’t write yourself off before you have been told the actual biopsy results and the treatment planned for you. No matter what is found, there will be a plan to treat it. Keep us posted and we will help you through with what is coming up.

Thank you for responding. I'm sure she said pre cancerous cells, but I was so distressed over the call back I'm doubting it. It's just that last year they rang me & said there was no cancer & then rang me 4 weeks later & said there was cancer, & then when I went for my 6 month check up in January, he said I looked healthy & he didn't expect to see me for 12 months so I was so happy & then the results came back as abnormal so I think I've lost my trust in what is being said to me. But yes, what you said has helped, whatever is there they will treat it & in the light of day I'm feeling more settled. I know I have been so lucky to get diagnosed with such an early stage.  Thank you both for your help & support.

  • Oh my goodness-no wonder you are distressed and have lost your trust. It’s not usual to have so long between check ups to be honest and I’m surprised they said you wouldn’t have to come back for a year. Even after your hysterectomy I would have expected you would have had a check up at 3 months since you had cancer.

When you got your results after the hysterectomy, did they say they had got clean margins-ie that the cancer had been completely removed? Since it was such an early stage I would expect they did, because it’s highly unlikely for that stage of cancer to spread. Hopefully it is precancerous cells in this most recent finding. Since it’s been 4 weeks and you haven’t had your results, I would call and chase this up if you can.
