Hi Everyone,

I'm new here but feeling a little lost at the moment and not sure where else to turn.

I'm 28, married mummy of 1, my daughter is 16 months old. Since having her I've had issues with pain and bleeding during/after intercourse. I didn't think much of it and put it down to having a rough labour (forceps, cut and tore). When I went for my smear back in July I happened to mention it to the nurse, who said she would refer me to the hospital as she noticed some bleeding on contact during examination, but not to worry and it was super common. My smear came back normal as had my previous one 3 years ago. Fast forward to this week, I finally went for my colposcopy (cancelled twice due to covid). Whilst in the waiting room I noticed a poster for cervical cancer symptoms; irregular bleeding, pain during intercourse, lower back pain etc, unusual discharge; all symptoms I have. I saw the nurse and explained everything who noted it all down and then said, a normal smear isn't a guarantee. During my colposcopy they found the ectropion cells the nurse had previously seen as well as a large patch of something else. They took a biopsy and advised they weren't able to remove the cells there and then until they knew exactly what they were dealing with, and I would be called back to discuss my results within 6 weeks. Now I'm panicking, and dont know how I can possibly wait 6 weeks to find out?

Apologies for the long post, but does anyone have any advice and/or experience of a similar situation?

Thanks x

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

Whilst I haven't had the experiences you've had with symptoms and tests, I do know what it's like to have to wait 6 weeks for biopsy results. I won't bore you with all the details here but if you want to read my story just click on my profile.

The best advice I can give you while you wait is to try and occupy yourself doing things that you enjoy. I realise that during lockdown this isn't so easy but if you have any hobbies now is the time to indulge them. Some people find mindfulness helpful and if you think you might like to try this then this link to the NHS website will give you access to apps you can download, some of which are free.

I know this is easy for me to say but all the worry in the world will make no difference to the outcome of your results but it will make a difference to your health and mental wellbeing. Have a look at this on how to ease worry when waiting for medical results but if you feel that you're not coping, or things are getting worse, do speak to your GP.

Let us know how you get on

Thank you for your reply latchbrook, I hope you are keeping well!

I received notification today that an appointment has been made for me in clinic in 4 weeks time and 'if appropriate, I will be offered treatment on the day.' I'm not sure if this good news or bad but at least I should have more answers before Christmas. I'm trying to keep myself busy so as not to think about it too much x

Hi there. I just wanted to add that when I had my urgent referral appointment through I was able to call and get a cancellation. It's always worth calling, especially if you are concerned. X

Hi what did your results end up saying, if you don't mind me asking.
