Scared of my symptoms

Back in 2022, after asking for my smear to be brought forward a couple months (24 at the time) I was told I had high grade CIN3 cell changes. I had these removed in January 2023 and my follow up colposcopy 6 months later was clear. I am not due my next smear until next year however I’ve been having niggling pains and a constant period like dull ache. My GP asked me to come in and as soon as she touched my cervix to do a smear, it started bleeding and had mucus inside it. She said my cervix feels normal but that the entrance to it didn’t look normal and that it could be scar tissue from my previous lletz. She also said she could see a polyp which sent my health anxiety clean away. Fast forward 3 days later and my ‘period like pain’ is so much worse at night time. It was that bad last night I thought I was going to have to go to a&e. When I woke up this morning it was gone. I’ve had no bleeding and I’m on the yasmin pill and have been for 14 years. I’m no due to take the 7 day window for a bleed for another 6 days. Has anyone else had concerning symptoms and been told they were okay? I am expecting my smear to be abnormal. I paid private for a women’s pelvic health scan and they didn’t see anything untoward. Any advice?

  • Hi  and welcome to our group.

I can understand that you’re worried, especially since your doctor could see a polyp. These are almost always benign growths, but have you been referred to a gynaecologist for further testing? I would expect that to happen as you have been having some symptoms which are unusual for you.

From your post you are looking for replies from others who had symptoms and were ok, which wasn’t the case for me, but as no-one else has replied yet I wanted to say hello so that you know your post has been seen. Hopefully others might also reply, but everyone’s situation is individual, so it’s very hard to compare yourself to others.

Have you been told what will happen next?

  • Yes I have been referred to Gynae for a colposcopy to see what’s going on. I’m so sorry to hear you didn’t get good news. How are you now? Did you have any symptoms? If you don’t mind me asking xx

  • I just read your story. I’m so sorry you’ve been through so much, I’m really hoping for the best. I have been red flagged so will be seen within two weeks xx

  • My story is a fairly extreme one, and uncommon, and I’m doing ok now thanks. Absolutely hope for the best though I understand that things are worrying until you find out more. I was in a very different situation being post menopausal, but the colposcopy will allow a much closer look at your cervix and may involve either taking tissue from the polyp or removing it completely depending on its size.

I hope you’ll come back and let us know how you get on at your appointment and hope it goes well for you.
