Hi, I’ve had my smear results come back as positive and need to have colposcopy next week and it says with treatment. When I’ve looked on my NHS account (wish I hadn’t) it says Glandular neoplasia of an endocervical nature and positive LBC SNOMED CODE CX: TEA559.M81403. Please can you tell me what this means I’m sick with worry. I’m 39 and had spotting for a month that has now stopped after period came. Should I be prepared for the worst? What should I expect at my appointment. Thank you so much.
Hi Tracy3210
Sometimes it can be a double edged sword having access to the nhs app as there are a lot of codes used which are medical and not necessarily easily interpreted by anyone except the medics.
I do know what the glandular neoplasia is (CGIN) as this describes abnormal cells and their location in the cervix. This is not cancer, but precancerous cells. There are different levels of CGIN on a scale of 1-3 which indicate how abnormal the cells look with 1 being the level looking closest to normal cells, 2 being a little more abnormal, and level 3 being cells which look the most different to normal cells.
The colposcopy appointment is where they will take a much closer look at your cervix with magnification, to see where these abnormal cells are exactly located-you may have a liquid applied to the are which highlights where they are.
You may have a biopsy or biopsies taken called punch biopsies. These are where tiny samples are taken for analysis in the lab. I didn’t feel pain myself having this done, but I did have some bleeding (doesn’t happen to everyone) so I’d recommend taking a pad with you just in case. I didn’t and wish I had!
I appreciate you are worried, but you ask if you should prepare for the worst. I didn’t think like that-I was hoping everything would be ok and tried not to assume anything before I went to my appointment. The colposcopy will happen soon, and then there will be a wait for results to see what treatment might be needed. Try to keep yourself busy and distracted, which I understand isn’t easy, but it’s better than letting your thoughts run away with themselves.
Please let us know how you get on, and there will be support for you in the group with any questions you might have. Things should feel better once you know what’s going to happen and everything is explained to you. All the best with your appointment.
Sarah xx
