Hello everyone I am new here and im just hoping someone else can give me some information about my journey so far. Please!
So for as long as I can remember I have had irregular bleeding..and have been asking for smear testing as I had my daughter at a young age then shortly followed my son. The doctors refused testing as I didn't fall into the age bracket and I was always told it was something else causing the bleeding. It became my new norm.
As I've got older the bleeding got more heavier and I was concerned. I took took google and I had 4 out of 6 unusual symptoms along with the common symptoms. I told my sister and she told me too book in for a smear so I did.
Went for a smear on the 16.04.25 and was booked in with a gynecologist on the 06.06.25. In the clinic she confirmed my smear results from the doctor (I still hadn't recieved my results) and I had a biopsy..
Fast forward to now..I havnt got my biopsy results but im booked in again with the gynecologist at the hospital on the 03.07.25. Should I be worried? Like I said I don't know what my results are and I've rang the hospital and doctors but I've been told to just wait for my results in the post and too attend my appointment? So here I am asking if anyone else has light on the matter or has had a similar experience?
Thankyou for reading!
Hi Kee91 and welcome to our group.
I don’t think anyone on here would be able to make guesses about your situation-we are not medics here, but we are here to help with our own experiences. When you say that the gynaecologist confirmed your results from the doctor, do you know what that meant? The first test in a cervical screening is a test for the hpv virus, and if that is present, the next step is testing of the cervical cells to see if there are any changes.
I’m assuming that was the case for you, and that’s why you had the biopsy taken. I would imagine that your upcoming appointment with the gynaecologist will be to discuss those results and confirm if any treatment is needed. It’s often the case that results aren’t discussed over the phone (mine never were) and the appointment gives you the chance to have everything explained to you, and for you to ask questions.
I think it’s difficult to say if you should be worried-it’s very natural to be concerned about any tests and waiting for results, but I’d recommend not going to dr google for answers as it cannot diagnose you and may make you more anxious. I know it’s difficult waiting for appointments-we’ve all been there, but things do get better once you have answers and know what will happen next.
Let us know how you get on and the group is here if you need any support.

Hello Sarah and thankyou for your reply :) sorry if my post misleading. So i had a smear and didn't hear anything back until I checked my NHS app and I had an appointment with the gynecologist..still hadn't had any results from my smear. So I went to the appointment and found that my smear shown abnormal cell changes hence my appointment where a biopsywas taken.. The gynecologist confirmed high risk HPV, mild acetowhite and iodine negative? Again she wrote to me and I seen this on paper.
But the gynecologist said to wait for my results then further treatment would be discussed? Again didn't think too much about it and now I have no results and another appointment its 4 weeks since my last appointment so im trying to guess what the second appointment could be for? As I don't have my results..and no one is telling me nothing over the phone xx
No worries-thanks for clarifying all that’s happened so far. So, the high risk hpv has caused cell changes and you are now waiting for the biopsy to confirm the level of these changes.
When you go for the next appointment, they will tell you what’s happening with the cells that have been analysed, and what the next treatment might be -for abnormal cells it would normally be a LLETZ treatment, where these abnormal cells are removed and then you would have what’s called a “test of cure” 6 months later. This will be checking that everything has been successfully taken away.
This link will explain what is involved in the LLETZ
You may have to have a further appointment to have this treatment done after you see the gynaecologist-it will depend if a LLETZ is required, and this depends on what has been found at the biopsy. Unfortunately, the diagnostic process can seem very long and drawn out, but it’s important that they know exactly what they’re dealing with before proceeding further.
I don’t think anyone is trying to keep anything from you by not telling you over the phone, so try not to worry about that. Non medical staff should not ever give out results as they are not qualified and results should only come from a nurse/doctor/ consultant. That makes sure you are given all the correct information you need.

Thankyou for you reply again. I know i shouldn't turn to dr google but its the not knowing that is giving me a headache. Would I get an appointment even if my biopsy results were fine? As I've read that sometimes a smear can show changes but a biopsy can still be negative..so if mine was negative would I still be given an appointment to go back to the hospital to discuss my results? And thankyou so much for helping me. I do appreciate it xx
I can’t say for certain-I’ve had good and bad results and always had to have a face to face appointment because that’s the way my hospital does things. Google honestly won’t really help without knowing what is wrong as it can’t tell you, and you could drive yourself crazy trying to guess.
It’s true that a smear can show changes, while the biopsy could be negative but the biopsy is a tiny sample and it would depend where it’s taken from as to what it may show.
I know it’s hard to deal with the waiting, but it’s part and parcel of the process I’m afraid, and you’ll need to wait for your appointment to know more, hard though that is.
