Side effects after active treatment finishes

Hi. I finished treatment on the 21st of January. I had chemo, radiotherapy and brachy. The chemo I had was carboplatin, paclitaxel and Cisplatin.

I'm writing to ask who else has had these side effects AFTER active treatment.

I am experiencing back pain, lower to middle. Every day but it is relieved with pain killers and/or rest.

Also, bad breath. I have less taste buds at the moment. But I'm concerned my breath smells. I have a nasty taste in my mouth and it feels to me like my breath smells. Is this a side effect of Cisplatin?

Thank you!

  • Hi

Side effects can take a while to subside after treatment, so things may settle down in time. I didn’t have the same chemo, mine was only Cisplatin, so I didn’t have any mouth issues. My hip and back pain was more likely to have been from my radiotherapy, but I hope others might come along who have had the same treatment plan as you had to tell you how they’ve been after treatment finished.

  • Hi, I finished treatment in December, chemo cisplatin, radio and brachy

I did have and awful taste in my mouth for a while, which seems to be going now, I seem to ache all over, feel like I’ve aged 20 years but didn’t know if it was a side effect or just from going back to work as my job is quite physical x

  • Hi DebDebW

I had terrible lower back pain after completing my treatment.  Went to the GP who referred me for an X-ray: normal result.  It was concluded that the pain was musculo-skeletal which made sense as, on reflection, I'd been a lot less active than usual during my treatment and my muscles had got weak.  I was referred to physio: followed all the advice and got a big improvement within a couple or so months.

I was diagnosed with stage 2A squamous cell cervical cancer (node negative) in 2017 following symptoms: persistent, watery, yellow vaginal discharge then post-menopuasal bleeding.  My treatment was a radical hysterectomy followed by chemo-radiotherapy.  My long term side effects include lymphoedema and urinary retention which I manage with intermittent self catheterisation.
  • I have had achalasia as a child then cancer in my throat later after I could not swallow.
It took ages to be diagnosed so I had an operation a few years ago, but because of the treatment and now pills it seems to have finally gone.
I however agree, my taste buds have disappeared and but they are slowly coming back. Just morning breath is awful. I use a ginger shots (home made) but you can buy these now witch  cleans your palette from feeling like a carpet. I still cannot stop sleeping but its all good so far. So please stick with it
