Follow up Treatment

Morning eveyone,

I'm having total freak out moment like i guess we all do. Short version, Cervical cancer - Radical Hysterectomy and no further treatment necessary back in 2023.

My 5 year follow up seams to be internals every 6 months and thats it.

Someone asked me the other day why no blood tests and it's freaking me out.

So my question is whats everyone elses 5 year check plan? should I be requesting a blood test... any advice would be great.

  • Hi and welcome to our group.

There was a discussion in the group quite recently about follow up checks and there seems to be some differences for everyone who posted, depending on what stage of cancer and treatment they had.

For me, my plan was checks every 3 months in the first year which involved a discussion about how I was doing, followed by an internal exam. No scans were planned unless I had symptoms. The check ups would reduce in frequency over the following 5 years although I had a recurrence 9 months after treatment so things changed for me.

Blood tests are not used in cervical cancer follow ups-with some cancers they are used because those cancers can show particular tumour markers in the blood but cervical cancer doesn’t.

So, no need to panic-blood tests are not required.

  • Thats really helpful, thank you for sharing.

  • Hi Sarah

I hope all is good with you. I am so sorry but again we seem to have different post treatment follow ups and for me my squamous cell cancer antigen blood test is a really important element of my 3 monthly check. When i was first diagnosed with cervical cancer this blood test had a value of 1253 ng/dl,(HIGH) post treatment it has stayed within the normal range of 0 - 150 ng/dl which is massively reassuring to me and my consultant.

Im not sure if the type of cervical cancer you have is relevant for this blood test, i had squamous cell carcinoma in situ of of uterine cervix (FIGO CC Stage IIB)

Cercan2025, not sure if the type of cancer you were treated for is the same, but it may be worth sending an email to your team to query if it is.

    Best wishes

  • Hi  and thanks for sharing this. I had cervical adenocarcinoma so a different type of cervical cancer.

I have to say I’ve never read about your particular test in the 4 years I’ve been in the group, but appreciate you bringing to our attention here.

  • Forgot to add, I notice you’ve not got any information in your profile. I’d encourage filling this in with details of your treatment etc as things can get lost in general threads. It’s handy for everyone to be able to see your info in one place and this would be a good example of something you could include in your bio.
