Hey! I’m new here not sure what I’m looking for, not been diagnosed I went for a iud while the doctor did her examination she asked when my last smear was( which are always up to date) then didn’Slight smilesay much said she can’t place it inside and she wants to send me gyno. She didn’t tell me anything else. I kept calm for the 2 weeks and no appointment I called up and I had been lost in the system. I asked for my referral which they gave me and then an appointment for Thursday coming. On the referral she said appearance on examination of cervix is consistent with cervical cancer and suspicious lesions and large red lesion blocking cervical is fixed. I’m trying to be positive as I have 2 small children and I’m only 33 but all them words together are not seeming so hopeful to me. Any advice or same situations would be more than welcome

  • Hi  and welcome to our group.

I’m so sorry to read that your referral was lost in the system-that’s the last thing you need when you are anxiously waiting to see a specialist. At least you now have an appointment arranged.

A gp cannot know what’s going on for sure-no matter what they believe they have seen. You would still need to have any lesions biopsied to confirm cancer, if it is present. My gp clearly saw something on my cervix, and  referred me to a gynaecologist, but did not mention cancer to me. Even my gynaecologist did not mention cancer when I saw him-he just said he had seen a lesion and would take biopsies, which he did.

There can be reasons other than cancer, and at least you don’t have to wait too long for your appointment now. Please let us know how you get on, and feel free to ask any questions in the group. We can help you with advice and support if you do get a cancer diagnosis, but I always worked on the proviso that it wasn’t cancer until they said it was.

  • Hi sarah21,

yes was a nightmare being lost but very happy to have my appointment now. I’m very much trying to be in the head space I don’t have cancer on till the doctors says as I know there is so many things out there that this could be. I was very confused reading what the doctor said, as far as I was aware myself to know it’s cancer has to be a test not just by eye! Thank you for getting back to me and I will keep you updated. Hopefully with good news.

  • Hi

Sometimes it’s possible for doctors to have a very good idea that they are looking at cancer, but I’m talking about gynaecologists rather than a gp. However, neither the gp nor the gynaecologist suggested cancer to me so I didn’t have that extra level of anxiety waiting for results. It’s only the biopsy that definitely determines cancer, so it’s been a real shame you’ve had to wait so long to find out more.

I hope your appointment goes well today and you’ll come back and let us know how you get on.

  • Hey,

so I had my appointment she said it was a polyp. She has removed it and sent it for a biopsy don’t know if this is what they usually do but I feel so much more at ease and don’t think I have cancer now. Thank you for your replies I will update when I get the results. Thank you

  • That’s really good-polyps are normally benign. It’s usual for anything they remove to be analysed by the lab, but this sounds like positive news for you! One of things I don’t like is doctors suggesting you might have cancer when they really don’t know. Always best to wait and see, but hopefully you’ll hear back with your results and there will be nothing more to be concerned about.
