im just looking for advice if anyone can help my mum was having really heavy bleeding for a while and went through the smear colcoscopy and stuff we have been told she has cervical cancer but waiting on mri. She is worried sick she is going to die she hasn't had any more symptoms except bleeding. She has had ultrasounds internal and external 2 weeks before that and they said it was clear would that be a good sign it hadn't spread. They were before the colcoscopy and we didn't know about the cancer or the smear results then we are worried sick we just need some type of hope or anything I asked the colcopsy nurse would it be surgery and he said it looks like chemo but he cant tell me until. the mri she is only 53 please someone give me hope

  • Hi  and welcome to our group.

I’m sorry to hear about your mum, but hope you can get some reassurance from us here in the group.

Ultrasounds are not commonly used in the diagnosis process for cervical cancer, and the mri is the most important scan as a first step. It will show the size and location of the tumour which will enable the stage of the cancer to be established, and from there your mum will get a treatment plan.

Surgery, ie a radical hysterectomy, is normally only possible at stage 1, and beyond that the treatment would normally be a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Many of us in the group have been through this successfully and come out the other side!

I was diagnosed at stage 2b in 2018, and am coming up to the 6 year anniversary of diagnosis very shortly. Treatment for cervical cancer can be very successful, so I hope this will give you some hope.

Please feel free to ask any questions in the group and we will do our best to help support you. Hope there is not too long a wait for the mri-keep us posted if you can.

    Sarah xx

    • Aw thank you for letting me know that's very kind. She's just not showing symptoms except bleeding so we keep using some hope to look at that it's so hard and such a worry I'm so glad you are well that's amazing
  • It’s worrying and scary to get any cancer diagnosis, and I think all of us are afraid. However, the best thing to do I found is take one day at a time, one appointment at a time and try not to look too far ahead before you have any definite information.

I tried my best to have a positive outlook right from the start, and it really helps. Focus just on what you know for now, and don’t let your thoughts run away with themselves.

  • Hiya ,

I had heavy bleeding very bad for a long long time , had smear and colposcopy and was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer . I had radiotherapy and chemotherapy for 5 weeks then brachytherapy for three days . I am now in remission , I understand how you must be so worried . Every person is very different but they can honestly do such amazing things with the treatment now . I am so sorry your mum is going through this and I can only imagine how you must be feeling too . The treatment was horrid however for me it was a means to an end and somehow I got through it . Everyone has a different experience but please know everyone is here to listen and offer support if needed . Sending your mum lots of strength and light xx

  • Hi Staclov88

I had heavy bleeding prior to my diagnosis of cervical cancer in 2017: stage 2A squamous cell type.  My treatment included a radical hysterectomy followed by chemo-radiotherapy; so far so good.

It's scary time when you're waiting on staging etc.  Emotionally I found it got easier when I knew more about what I was dealing with and had a treatment plan in place.

I hope all goes as well as possible for your Mum x.

I was diagnosed with stage 2A squamous cell cervical cancer (node negative) in 2017 following symptoms: persistent, watery, yellow vaginal discharge then post-menopuasal bleeding.  My treatment was a radical hysterectomy followed by chemo-radiotherapy.  My long term side effects include lymphoedema and urinary retention which I manage with intermittent self catheterisation.
  • Thank you so much for your reply and I'm so glad your better it must have been bad she had a colcoscopy and a marina coil fitted 2 weeks ago but she's getting discomfort in her pelvis/groin area which she didn't have before that it does that sound normal xx

  • Hi

I’ve not read of anyone in the group having a mirena coil fitted when they’ve been diagnosed with cervical cancer. Has your mum got details of her CNS (cancer nurse specialist) or consultant? As the discomfort is a new symptom which she hasn’t had before, you should let them know.

You did say that the colposcopy nurse suggested that treatment might be chemo and not surgery so I’m unsure what the reason would be for having a coil fitted if she may need to undergo treatment?

Can I ask, was the diagnosis of cervical cancer given to your mum after the coil was fitted or before that and do you have a date through for her mri?
