Hi

i have cancer in the cervix, partly into vagina and in two lymph nodes. Tumour is about 3.5cn but re taking all scans and a pet scan next week ahead of treatment.

I am having radiotherapy and chemotherapy, followed then by brachytherapy.

I hadn’t really thought of the long term side effects or thought that’s this May not work and the alternatives are equally horrific. I am now freaking out!

The damaging effect of the radiotherapy is the worse bit, so much damage.

not feeling strong and not wanting to see people.

  • Hi Loulou and welcome to the group.

You may not have long term side effects, not everyone does, and radiotherapy and brachytherapy are the main tools to get rid of this cancer, with the chemo being low dose and just helping to “boost” the radiation. Try not to think about treatment not working at this stage-it can be extremely effective. Damage from radiotherapy is possible but not inevitable, try to remember that, and even side effects are preferable to cancer. My side effects subsided very quickly after treatment finished. Hoping you get your scans soon and find out more. And you don’t have to feel strong all the time, it’s just not possible. You can feel however you feel and it’s ok. xx

  • Hi,

just a positive story, I had the same treatment regime a year ago and now I have fully recovered. I don’t have any major side effect following treatment. The only bit is my cervix doesn’t feel the same But if you use the dilators following treatment as per doctor advise, you will be fine. To minimise any long lasting side effect try to follow the directions from the medical team. Drink a lot of water and try to have your bladder ready for the treatment. Full bladder minimise the risk of any potential side effects and damage to adjacent tissues during radiotherapy.

  • Hi Loulou,

I have just completed treatment for advanced cervical cancer. I had induction chemo, chemo and radio combined and 2 rounds of brachytherapy.

I felt exactly the same, at times I really think the days passed as I sat in an emotional bubble.

I have experienced damage from both radio and brachytherapy and I still am. I just wanted to reassure you that the help offered from my oncology team throughout these symptoms has been absolutely amazing and helpful and it’s worth reaching out and getting that help from them.

Wishing you all the positive vibes in the world! If you want to know anything at all please ask. I have also put a post up on the newbies section that might be of interest to you

  • hi , I have had the same treatment and was very lucky I feel with no real side affects other that being worn out and sleeping a lot more , I finished my treatment a month ago and I’m starting to feel good again

  • Hello Nub and welcome! That’s really good news for you. A month ago is not long, so you should find your energy levels increase as you move forward. I assume you’ll be having a scan soon to make sure everything’s going well? xx
