Hello everyone,
New to the forum, I have just found out my mum has stage 2 cervical cancer.
I am puzzled as to how she has been given a diagnosis of stage 2 but they do not yet know if it has spread?
She is waiting to get confirmation on a date for a pet scan which will tell us if it has spread.
But confused as to how they have given stage 2 before the pet scan results?
Hello Jcb93 and welcome.
I know from your username that I have already replied to you in some detail on another forum so I don’t want to repeat myself in here, but just wanted to say hello so that you know your post has been seen and read. x
Hi Jcb93
It seems to be the norm that patients are given an initial staging which is in fact provisional. I was initially staged as 1B1 but later restaged to 2A. The following explains this in more detail;
Following initial examination, and analysis of the biopsies, of my cervix I was told my tumour was provisionally stage 1B1 (stage 1B2 new FIGO) subject to change depending on the results of further tests.
Subsequent MRI and PET scans indicated my lymph nodes were clear and that there was no further spread so seemed to confirm my stage 1B1 diagnosis. I then had a lymphadenectomy, whereby my lymph nodes were removed and sent for histological investigation; no cancer cells were found and my staging was still assessed as 1B1 so I was advised to have a radical hysterectomy. Unfortunately, my post RH histology results showed lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) and perineural invasion (PNI) and that my tumour was bigger then initially thought so I was restaged to 2A. I was then advised to have chemo-radiotherapy.
I hope all goes as well as possible for your Mum

I was originally diagnosed as stage 2 after my MRI scan. My PET scan then showed it had spread to a lymph node and so I was then staged at 3. Hope this helps.
Hi Jcb93,
I believe that the diagnosis is based on the assumption that it hasn’t spread to adjacent limp nodes which they can see it from MRI scan. Pet scan will show if there is a metastasis of the cancer to other organs. Giving you a stage it means that the chances are slim if they don’t see limp nodes involvement. It is good that they referred her for a pet scan as the more test she does the better.

Hi piglet1977 just seen you're post I was just wondering how you're doing...I was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer 4 months ago had all my treatment...won't find out till beginning of June if worked...such a stress full time xxx
Hi Sheryl
CIN1 is not usually treated, but monitored, as it could possibly regress and not need any treatment. A smear is not a diagnostic test for cervical cancer, but a test for the hpv virus and to detect any abnormal cell changes, which it has done in your case. Having these abnormal cells does not mean you would ever get cancer-the whole point of the test is to identify the changes before they become cancer. As you are older, it can be more difficult to clear the virus and have the cells go back to normal, so has your doctor explained why the CIN1 won’t be treated?
For ladies who are unfortunate enough to develop cervical cancer, it does not necessarily mean they have not had yearly smear tests. It’s possible to have annual tests which are clear, and still have cancer as no tests can guarantee 100% accuracy.
