I’ve had hot flushes for 16 years, following debulking surgery last year they have worsened.I mentioned this to my consultant she suggested Evening Primrose Oil, I tried this many years ago but said I would give it another go, no improvement. She also mentioned prescribing me Venlafaxine, having read up about it,I’m not keen. I wondered if anyone can offer any help? Thank you.

Hi , I’m sorry no one from this group has replied yet, perhaps when I post with no experience they will leap into action. I have found this Macmillan information and support section on hot flushes

    https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/impacts-of-cancer/hot-flushes-and-sweating

Im thinking you May have tried their ideas though. I wondered wether you wanted to also post in the ask an expert section, I’ve put the link below they might have some more info on drug you mention.

    Thanks KT

  • Hello I'm sorry to hear that you have been suffering from hot flushes for 16 years. I am not medically qualified but I have been prescribed HRT at the recommendation of my hospital consultant and it has alleviated my menopause symptoms including hot flushes although this is not the main reason I have been advised to take HRT. Some medical conditions including some gynaecological cancers mean that it is not advisable to take hormones so it is best to check with your hospital and GP who know your medical history. I can recommend the book Menopause by Dr Sarah Brewer who is a menopause specialist. The book contains a lot of practical and useful advice and is not just about HRT. Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust forum is the main place where you are likely to find women who have had cervical cancer or treatment for cell changes so it may be worth posting on there too to see if anyone else replies. The Eve Appeal is a charity specialising in gynae cancers so the nurses on there or on MacMillan should also be able to advise you.

    I really hope this helps

Thanks so much for your reply, I posted by mistake in the cervical cancer group instead of the ovarian cancer one! I thought I’d deleted the original one but couldn’t have done. My consultant said I shouldn’t have hrt.

  • Hi Jifftiff thank you for your reply. I thought it may be the case that HRT was not advisable given your history of ovarian cancer. You may still find the book I mentioned useful as it contains general tips and advice on dealing with hot flushes including practical tips on cotton bedding and clothing etc and also suggests diet for managing symptoms as well as some natural remedies although of course you are probably aware you should always ask your medical team about these. The Eve Appeal may also still be useful to you as they specialise in women's health. There is another book they recommend - The gynae geek. The last time I had a hot flush was when I felt stressed and reading up on this apparently stress can be a trigger. It must be very frustrating for you. I think part of the problem is that menopause is often not discussed openly and you can feel very alone. Sarah Brewer has also written a recipe book on how diet can help alleviate symptoms. I hope some of this information helps you. Sending you hugs!
