Hi

My mum has recently been diagnosed with cervical cancer we have not yet been given a stage or how far everything is, we have only just received her biopsy and mri scan results  and after they have now decided it is cervical cancer they are sending her for an under anaesthetic examination and CT scan to see if it has spread. Her symptoms have been severe leg, back and abdominal pain change in bowel movement and unusual bleeding. I am now worried out my mind because I have read a lot online which tells me if you have leg and back it means the cancer is at an advanced stage. I am only 23 and it’s breaking my heart to see my mum go through this. Can any one give any advice as to if this is true does having leg and back pain always mean the cancer is at an advanced stage.

I would really appreciate any advice or help.

Thank you

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm really sorry to hear that your mum has recently been diagnosed with cervical cancer. It must be a very worrying time for you both and it's perfectly natural to feel as you do.

I don't have any experience with this type of cancer but I noticed that your post hadn't had any responses. You could post your question in ask a nurse and one of the specialist nurses will respond within 2 working days.

You might also benefit from joining the family and friends group where you can share your feelings and get support. If you'd like to join clicking on the link I've provided will take you there.

When you feel up to it it would be really useful if could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

    Hi Leop22

I'm really sorry about your mum and understand how worried you'll be.  I'm 2 years clear of cervical cancer  and had the same symptoms as your mum.  I had really bad leg ache and back ache and was stage 3b and it was treatable.  The treatment I had was chemo,  radiotherapy and brachytherapy and it was completely successful.   I know it's really hard not to,  but try not to Google.  I did all the time and it sent me bonkers!  I've never heard that pains in your legs or back means it is in an advanced stage.  I did mention the leg ache to my consultant and she said that it was nothing to worry about and not connected.   I hope this puts your mind at rest a little,  my daughter is your age and I know exactly how you'll be feeling.   Our NHS is the best and you're mum will be well looked after.   Jo's Cervical cancer is another good website that I used quite a lot.   It put my mind at rest speaking to other ladies in the same position and there's a lot of information on there.   I wish your mum a speedy recovery.   Please keep us informed how she's getting on.  Sending lots of love xx

    Hi Sarlou

Thank you so much for your reply, that really has helped hearing that! And I am so happy to hear you have been 2 years clear for you and your family, it’s great to hear that people are beating this and I’m hoping my mum will be able to do the same. It’s so hard not to send my mind into overdrive and sometimes I know google can be my worst enemy at times but I can’t help but search. my mums nurse told me to come on here if I have any questions which I know now has really helped me just from speaking to you so thank you for that, she also mentioned about Jo’s cervical cancer page I will take a look now. My mums next appointment is Wednesday just for a meeting at the hospital then I think she has an examination and CT scan, but I will definitely keep you informed! I’m just hoping and praying we can start treatment soon for her so she can get back to herself.

Sending lots of love back xxx

Aw it's a pleasure.   I'll be thinking of you both next Wednesday.   I know the waiting for appointments and tests can be frustrating, I just wanted to crack on and get started!  Private message me if you want to chat,  radiotherapy threw me into an early menopause so I'm nocturnal and prone to ordering rubbish off the internet at 3 in the morning that I have no idea what to do with !  I know its a really really daunting journey, believe me I was a wreck,  but, she'll put her head down and forge forward I promise - and she's obviously got a lovely supportive daughter.   I look back now and honestly can't believe I went through it and so will she.  Keep in touch and remember just message me even if you think it's a silly question.

    Big hug xx

I think sometimes it’s the waiting for test results and not knowing that can make you go crazy! My mum also just wants the Treatment to start as soon as possible now so she knows it’s another step forward my auntie had breast cancer a few years ago so she is quite a comfort to her helping her through and tonight I have found speaking on here has helped me! I am new to this so will try giving you a private message now.
    thank you xxx
